I am not sure that making a tool is possible or even worth it. Many of the popular auto parts stores have a tool rental program (or you just use retail rental, buy, use, return.)

My concern would be the tension on the springs and the little retainers that hold them. Even with the head off and with the tool this was a job. The spring compressor kept popping off. I tried three styles of compressors and used the one that popped the least. Also the retainers liked to fall in the hardest to get to part of the head. So having a compressor you are not so sure about and scrambling to find and replace the retainer is probably not a good idea.

There is a good write up on this page:

What causes engine to blow bluish white smoke and cause engine to quit approx. 10 sec. after starting

Blue smoke on start is oil leaking through valve seals into the cylinder, white smoke is actually steam that is from a bad head gasket that is leaking coolant into the cylinders.

Blueish white smoke comeing from exhaust

Hello There

White smoke when first started is normal. If white smoke continues you have an internal coolant leak, i.e., cracked head/blown head gasket.
Black smoke is caused by a rich fuel condition.
Blue smoke is caused by oil consumption.

You need to check your oil cap for yellow/white gunk on the cap if you have this then this is a sign your head gasket is cracked. Check to see if your radiator coolant level is down this is also another sign.

Hope this helps. Please don't forget to rate me.

Many Thanks

Have 1995 ford econovan petrol had stem seals replaced 2 years ago motor idles perfect runs really well not losing water oil still clean blowing white smoke from exhaust mainly on mainly on acceleration

Blown head gasket. Pull the spark plugs. The cleanest one is where it is blowing or sucking coolant. Sorry. White is water/coolant. black is gas. bluish is oil.

Have excessive blue or white smoke from exhaust when truck is started after sitting for a few hours 2005 f250 6.0 ehgine

Hi,
is it a diesel or gas engine?
Usually excessive blue smoke on start up indicates oil is getting into the combustion chamber. It could be piston rings or valve seals.
Quick check, drive it within operating range and speed. Either use the rear view mirror or get someone to drive it and you follow in another vehicle. Accelerate, then take your foot of the accelerator. Blue smoke under acceleration indicates piston rings / pistons. Blue smoke on deceleration or the "over-run" indicates worn valve guides / seals.

White smoke can indicate coolant in the combustion chambers / leaking cyl head gskt, or incorrect fueling. If brake fluid gets into the combustion chamber it will generate a lot of white smoke from the exhaust. However, that would entail a leaking brake master cyl and a leaking brake booster.

Good luck.

2001 ford windstar .Dorman 615-177 kit was installed .It has 350 miles on it since the install but on startup it's blowing white smoke.doesn't stumble ,idles fine and drives fine.Smoke is just brief on...

Valve seal leaks will cause an engine to smoke on start until the oil burns off. If a head gasket were leaking it would be smoking constantly.

Blue smokes come out tailpipe when i start the car but stops afte

Helllo there
Symptom: Gray or blue smoke from the exhaust. You notice gray smoke coming from the exhaust when you start your car. The smoke may or may not disappear after the car is warmed. If it is, it is less noticeable. The smoke may have a bluish tint to it. Possible causes:

  1. The engine's piston rings may be worn.
The Fix: Replace piston rings. (Generally not a DIY job)
  2. The engine's valve seals may be worn.
The Fix: Replace valve seals. (Generally not a DIY job)
  3. Damaged or worn valve guides.
The Fix: Replace valve guides. (Not a DIY job)
Symptom: Engine uses more oil than normal, and there is some smoke from the exhaust. The oil level is low between oil changes. It appears that the oil is being burned by the engine because of the smoke in the exhaust. You may or may not notice the engine doesn't have the same power as it used to.
Possible causes:

  1. The PCV system is not working properly.
    The Fix: Replace PCV valve.
  2. The engine may have mechanical problems.
The Fix: Check compression to determine engine condition.
  3. The engine's piston rings may be worn.
The Fix: Replace piston rings. (Generally not a DIY job)
  4. The engine's valve seals may be worn.
The Fix: Replace valve seals. (Generally not a DIY job)

1996 volvo 850 turbo smoke coming out exhaust

I assume you mean exessive smoke?
White smoke = watersteam - usually cracked cylinderhead gasket
Replace gasket
Black / dark smoke preferrably visible when accelerator is let up after acceleration = oil - usually enters the cylinders through worn valve seals.
Repclace seals (can be done without lifting cylinder head)

My car is blowing smoke and shuddering ef falcon

What color is the smoke ? is it bluish or is it white ?
The blue colored smoke would smell more like burning oil, which would indicate a broken piston ring, ect. the white smoke if it smells of coolant(anti-freeze) would lean toward a head gasket problem.

1995 honda Civic Ex / 99000 mi / Bluish gray smoke coming from exhaust pipe upon acceleration

bluish is oil burning,if your car is smiking worse going up a hill that is piston rings,if you notice it worse coasting down a hill that is valve seals, but have you tried replacing the PCV valve yet, this lets the engine breath like you and me
