My external hard drive (MDL WD25001032) fell off my coffee table (about 1 1/2 feet from the floor) onto the carpet. Now my computer cannot locate the hard drive. The light is still on and it sounds like it is doing something, but nothing comes up... I have alot of pictures saved on this hard drive. Please help!

Hi,

these drives are a bit delicate and do tend to damage easily when dropped. You may just have knocked a cable loose, could have damaged the usb controller board or may have damaged the HDD.

If you're not concerned about warranty, you can slide the shell off of the body of the drive with a little prying around the back edge(around the metal end with all the plugs. It can be put back when you're done but you will likely leave some tool marks on it.

Once you have it open you will see the HDD mounted along the cases length, at one end it has two small cables attached. ensure they are snug, then follow each to it's other end and ensure they are snug, the check the small circuit board running perpendicular to the HDD to ensute the pinned end it securely attached to the larger ciruit board.

Test the drive, if no luck the next step involves buying a new drive enclosure. Go to you local computer store and ask for a 3.5" SATA Hard Drive enclosure. Then finish disassembling the Western Digital, removing the HDD and placing it in the new Enclosure, be careful not to touch the circuit board attached to the bottom of the hard drive.

Once you've installed the HDD in the new enclosure plug it into your computer and power it up. If this works your done, if not the HDD may be finished.

Still if this doesn't work you can send the HDD for recovery to a pro, try Armor-IT Data Recovery in Canada, they have good rates and are listed on FixYa's directory.

Hope this helps FixYa

We have MDL WD25001032 in the office, which seems to have died, power comes on but can not be read or accessed on a computer/laptop! Desperate to get this going as all back-ups are on this disk!

Try hooking it up if you hear any noise its not bad. My drive does same thing it just seeks for about 30min-1hr then comes on and works fine. Make sure to check it about every 10mins or so as the drive will shut back off. I do suggest backing up and replacing it if you get it working.

Need power supply spec's for this WD25001032 hard

If you can procure it you need a "Wattac" AC adapter
model: BAO362ZI-8-A01 (made in China)

Otherwise you need a 12 volt 2 Amp. power pack with positive on centre contact & 2mm pin hole.

My 1tb disk fell from a table and it doesn'st work

Considering the fact that you can buy them from Western Digital, for an arm and a leg of coarse.  I would say look on ebay for a junk one with a bad hard drive and just swap it.  Other than that you can buy just an empty hard drive enclosure off ebay or newegg pretty cheap...around 20 bucks.  I am taking it your hard drive would probably be a SATA.  But before you buy, make sure the connectors will fit.  it will be long and skinny, which is IDE or short and skinny, SATA.

I droped my WD external hard disk

sounds like maybe you damaged the case itself. Actually all that is is a fancy hard drive external enclosure. If you open it up. And get the hard drive out. You could hook it up to another computer. And then you should be able to get your data. If the hard drive was running when it fell it may have problems. But, if the hard drive was off the drive is probably fine.

Lightly Dropped Seagate 100GB External Hard Drive

Unfortunately, this probably means the read/write heads were jarred and can no longer function properly. That's usually fixable, but it's a very expensive fix because the parts are inside the hard drive and the data surfaces are very delicate... Most people are better off simply replacing the hard drive unless the data is absolutely vital.
