Question about LG WM0642H Front Load

LG WM0642HW smells bad. We leave the door open when not in use to dry it out and air it out. But the smelliness is getting worse.

The bad smells occur pretty quickly after using the washer. Adding 2 cups of bleach frequently will probably be harmful to our septic system. So I'll have to continue the search for an alternative solution.

There have been lot's of reports of moldy door seals. Check your door seal at the bottom to see if it is holding water and not draining properly. Dry and clean with a bleach solution is it is. Front loaders don't always drain completely. WHen you start a new cycle the first thing they do is purge any water left from the previous one. This also causes a mold issue. Easiest solution is to do a stain cycle with presoak and add 2 cups of bleach to kill the mold. Obviously no clothes! Good luck!

Hey, don't forget that this front load washer will only use about 12 gallons of water for an entire cycle (vs. about 45 for most top load machines) which means you must use much less detergent and fabric softener. For your machine, use a maximum or 1 tablespoon of HE detergent (1/2 TBL if it's a 2X concentrate) and only 1 teaspoon of fabric softener if you use it.
The most common reason for the smells are build up of soap and / or fabric softener inside the washer. If can also be the cause of odor in the clothes after they are washed. Try putting a few recently washed towels in your washer with no soap and starting a cycle. After it runs a minute or two, pause the cycle and look if there is any suds. There should be none. I think you will see some.
To solve your problem, after you check and clean the door seal area as rjberg123 noted, use a cleaner designed for cleaning out front load washers. A package (3 tables) of Ah-fresh, or smellywashercleaner (semllywashercleaner.com), wirlaway hot tub cleaner, or tide front load washer cleaner, to name a few would all do the trick. You may have to do this twice. Wash any smelly clothes now once without any soap or fabric softener. BEGIN USING THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF HE SOAP (and fabric softener, if used)
Sorry this got a bit long. Good luck. I've had my LG front loader for 6 years now, and only had an odor issue once.

This machine has a tub clean feature that you're supposed to run with bleach. I did this and it helped the smell s bit. Recently we had an error code and the repair man that came to fix it gave me some good tips. His experience has been that the smell is from too much soap causing build up in the seal and along the tub. His suggestion was to cut back on the amount of detergent (he said a tablespoon is sufficient). His company recommends using a product called Whirlout (you can buy it at Home Depot). It was originally meant to clean scum out of hot tub jets. I was told LG will recommend this product if you call, but haven't bothered to suggest it in the owner's manual. I was told to put one to two capfuls directly into the tub (not the detergent bay) and run the tub clean cycle. I used it last night and it worked - no more musty, yucky smell!

Make sure the washer is draining properly during the spin cycle, if its not it could cause kindof a musty stinky smell.

I had the same problem. You must take out your clothes immediately and leave the door open after every wash to let the inside of the washer completely dry. I believe I read to run a cycle of bleach water and wipe down the inside of the door and interior with bleach/water mixture. Then let it dry. You then can start washing your clothes again, but you must be diligent about leaving the door open to air out between washings.Hope this works for you. I almost sold my machines shortly after I bought them because my clothes were always smelly after washing. Leaving the door open has worked for us.

I can't find a tub clean feature on my LG WM0642HW. I am having trouble with moldy smelling clothing and want to try some of your solutions but can't find the tub clean feature.

My LG doesn't have one either, but I recall that they recommend using the "Rinse and Spin" feature. Add a bit of chlorine bleach, run the cycle, and then "always" leave the door ajar after each use so that the machine can dry out. Cleaning out the drain area at the bottom of the rubber door seal helps too. You'd be surprised what I've found there -- other than the usual dog and cat hair!

Washer smells even after cleaning cycle

Hi,

It sounds like an air vent is either missing or clogged. That gurgling usually indicates some sy phoning action going on which is drawing water out of a gas trap. Hence you are getting sewer smell into the washer.

Thank you !!

I think that the problem is that these washers use too little water for rincing. Concentrated detergent residues are drying-up, solidifying on internal surfaces, including exhaust tube, and smell like...

I've got a Maytag with a similar issue.. Try this: Take a 1/2 cup of automatic dishwasher soap powder (Such as Cascade) and toss it into your washing machine without any clothes in it.
Run a whites, hot water cycle with an extra rinse to see if this will break down some of the buildup and remove the smell. You may want to run a second cycle without adding soap to clear the drain lines.

lg has a known problem with smelly mildew cloths. If you call LG they will tell you its not there problem. Cheapest solution is to wash door gasket with some clorox and then betwen washes leave door open. Wash on hottest and longest cycle with regular laundry soap and a bottle of vinegar. After cycle, wash again with soap on hottest/longest cycle. This will clean your washer like new.
