Early '90s mtd 20 ton log splitter developed a hydraulic fluid leak where the valve assembly connects to the piston housing. Leak is between hex nut and piston body. Suggestions...

2 possible answers
hydraulic washers in use have a steel surround with a rubber insert which acts a a seal
the rubber seals off and the steel stops hydraulic pressure from pushing it out of place
or the there is a crack in the thread where the hex nut is
get a new washer from a hydraulic shop and if that doesn't fix it, you may have to get a new valve body
discuss the problem when you are at the hydraulic shop for more ideas

I have a 45 ton Grudge Log splitter. the ram works but has no power to split logs.

indicates insufficient pressure from the pump
bypass at the ram/piston seals---seals or scored cylinder
have it checked by a hydraulic specialist

Log splitter won't return to start position

well it's a complete guess due to fact you didn't mention model or mfg or even a photo , but most log splitters have a auto return tripper device this should activate ,either a switch or hydraulic lever to reverse the flow of oil from the cylinder after a log is split , some models even use large springs to force the cylinder back into its sleeve after it extends out , I guess springs could break ? this would be easy to clearly see with a close visual inspection

I have a Delta Log Splitter model 38610C which needs an O-Ring oil seal for the Dip Stick. Delta no longer has the part. Is there any other supplier I could check out?

Take the dip stick to your local hardware store and find an O-ring that fits the diameter of the stick. They are cheep enough to get a few with cross sections of different sizes and use the one that fits snug when you put the dipstick back in.

Hi Karen,

You might try www.jackssmallengine.com and search by MTD-you'll need some serial/model numbers but they tell you where to find them.  It did list one MTD logsplitter.  Good luck! Nancy

I need a manual for an mtd log splitter. model #24BF552B729. please help. thanks

First things first. Your splitter has been recalled because of a limb amputation problem. If your splitter has not been repaired, you need to call this number. Firm's Recall Hotline: (888) 848-6038

If your splitter has been repaired, this web site should have everything you need.

TURN THE NUT WITH A PIPE WRENCH AND USE A PICK TO PRY THE REST OF THE RETAINER RING OUT OF THE SLOT. (YOU CAN LOOK INTO THIS SLOT A YOU TURN THE NUT, MAKING SURE THAT YOU HAVE ALL OF IT OUT. AFTER THIS IS DONE THE NUT CAN BE TAPPED OR PRIED OUT. I PREFER USING A BRASS PUNCH TO KNOCK IT OUT.
