Question about HP Compaq Presario SR1820NX (ER919AA) PC Desktop

Services default values for Vista

Can anyone tell me how to find out what the default settings should be. I have changed some to manual instead of auto in order to fix a 100% CPU usage problem - it solved the problem but caused others. Silly me, didn't make a list of the ones I changed.

We have all done that, go into you bios and there you will see install default settings, they will tell you the key like F5 or F9 then save and exit. that will install your default settings.
If you only have a problem or two tell us what the are the type and model of your computer and the operating system you employ. Most of the time it is only reinstall a driver or two...
good luck, please leave rating. thank you

Hi,
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US.
click here to Talk to a Technician (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Goodluck!

Overclock problem

Hi there, the freezing is probably caused by the north-bridge or CPU not getting enough voltage or becuase you are pushing your memory past the supported frequency, changing the FSB also changes the frequency of memory, overclocking a machine could also boost the temps past the point of conventional air cooling e.g might have to use water-cooling instead. You should be careful when you overclock your computer though, electronics are sensitive and you are going to cause permanent damage to either the board or CPU. I would rather advise you to return all values to default and continue to use the system normally, if you really need it to go faster rather go and buy a faster machine. b.t.w changing the PCI-e value will have no effect on your FSB and memory values, it could instead have an adverse effect on your graphics card if you have one installed

Tip

Applying the settings to the logon desktop

Next, you need to apply the Screensaver settings to the Logon Desktop / Welcome Screen (Technically, HKEY_USERS\.Default registry key), so that the Screensaver is invoked when no user is logged on. Copying all the Screensaver settings to the Logon Desktop (or Welcome Screen) manually is a tough task. Use Tweak UI instead.
Download and install TweakUI.
Launch TweakUI and click Logon, click Settings.
Select Screensaver from the list box and choose Copy Now
The Screensaver settings are applied to the Logon Desktop
Restart Windows for the changes to take effect
Allow few minutes at the Logon screen, to test if the Screensaver is working properly. The Screensaver should launch after the timeout. It will look as if the Company Logo moves around.
Additional Tip
The User interface / slider allows the minimum value for picture change interval to 6 seconds only. To reduce the change interval to less than 6 seconds, alter the registry value named ChangeInterval (Set decimal value 1000 for 1 Second, and so forth) in this key:
HKEY_USERS \ .DEFAULT \ Control Panel \ Screen Saver.Slideshow
For Current user profile, make the change here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Screen Saver.Slideshow

With no logon wallpaper set, Windows displays a pre-defined color for the logon desktop. ( If you have enabled Welcome Screen, press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice to see the logon screen background color. ) To change the logon background color to that of your choice, you need to alter the registry:
Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT and press Enter
Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Colors
Backup the registry key by exporting to a REG file
In the right pane, double-click Background
In the Edit String dialog box, type the Color code in R G B format and then click OK.
Example: Type 0 0 0 if you want to see a Black background. You can choose any combination from 0-255
Points to ponder
If the logon Wallpaper is set, the background Color may not be visible. So, you must reset the Wallpaper value to a blank string in this key: HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop
If the Background value is set under the following Winlogon registry key, the above setting is ignored. In other words, the Winlogon\Background value takes precedence over the .DEFAULT..\Background value.
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Failure to recognize CD ROM or USB ports

  1. Run Registry Editor (regedit).
  2. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor
  3. In the right pane, double click on the Start value name.
  4. Change the value data to 4 to disable the removable USB mass storage device drive access
  5. 5.
  6. To revert and re-enable the drive access for removable USB mass storage device driver, change back the value data for Start to its original default of 3.
The change will take effect immediately to block any USB mass storage device such as USB flash drive, USB key and portable harddisk from been used in the system, while still allowing hardware components to work properly via USB connection. The hack works in most Windows operating system such as Windows Vista, XP, Windows Server 2008, 2003 and 2000.
For user who dare not to modify the registry manually, simply download the following registration entries file to enable or disable the USB drive. Extract the downloaded content in .ZIP format, and then double click on the .REG file to open and apply or merge the registry values to system.

Vista cannot get online

Go into componant services and turn them all on, it's comman with vista to have this happen when using certain optimizing and anti virus programs, like spybot. Your network may have been turned off. Also just try using the wizard to establish a new connection instead of trying to fix the one you are troubleshooting, I had a similar problem ith an HP laptop and vista, and it had some services stopped or set to manual, the reset of the services fixed it.

Vista Aero Glass Effect

According to http://www.tweakvista.com/article39008.aspx, you actually need to do this:
  1. Click on the start button and key in regedit and hit Enter.
  2. Navigate through, HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Windows and DWM.
  3. Set Composition to 1 and CompositionPolicy to 2.
  4. Restart the DWM by restarting the Desktop Windows Manager Session Manager service. This can be done in services.msc or by typing net stop uxsms and net start uxsms at command prompt.

Hope this helps! As always, be careful in the registry!!
