1996 Kenmore Dryer Front Load won't turn off. Heard a pop while turning knob to set it and now the only way to stop the dryer is to keep the door open

THE TIMER HAS A SMALL DRIVE MOTOR THAT TURNS THE TIMER AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS FOR DIFFERENT CYCLES AND VARIES FROM BRAND TO BRAND BUT EITHER WAY YOU MUST REPLACE THE TIMER , EXPENSIVE FIX IF THE DRYER IS WORTH IT THAT SHOULD TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM

most of the time it is the door switch that goes bad, also you can check the main fuse inside the dryer on the blower box,and always make sure your dryer vent and wall vent are clear to vent, let me know what you find-mike

What you describe is either a failed evenheat board or a failed motor relay.
Please post the complete model number from the machine and I can help you narrow it down. There should be a wiring diagram inside the console with voltage checks also.
Thanks/Mike

This sounds like you may have blown the thermal fuse. If you turn the dryer around facing the back, remove the screws holding the back panel on (be sure to unplug the pigtail from the wall!!!). When you remove the back panel, down towards the bottom, you will see a plastic piece (could be long and square, or rounded type. Do believe it will be the long type) with 2 wires going to it. It has a screw that holds it it. This fuse protecs the unit and motor from excess heat and electrical issues.

try replacing the door strikes and catches part # 279570...possible door hinge issue but less likely
