The dowel that the belt attaches to should have a slight "V" in it. This prevents the belt from slipping off. Check that, if it isn't there than you may need to replace the dowel. I own a Bissell and every 6-8 months replace the belts anyway as preventative maintenance is my philosophy.

You did not put the belt on its proper place that's why it happen. Replace again the belt and put it not over the metal part. Put a mark where the belt belong so that you'll remember it when you gonna instal the belt. A mark like pen or masking tape will do.
Thanks for asking.

I bought a Bisell Pro-heat carpet shampooer and had the belt break after one use. Tried to buy replacement belts only to discover that store out of stock. Question: Is there such a thing as a "generic" or...

Hello,

No unfortunately not. Some brands of vacuums and steam cleaners have similar belts that can be used on several different models, however this Bissell carpet cleaner has a very unique belt, that is really unlike any other belt on the market today.

I'm sorry to hear that your local store was out of stock on these. We do however have these belts in stock ready to ship today if you haven't already found them. We do offer free shipping & no tax (except VA). Here's a link to the brush belt for your Bissell:

Please feel free to add a comment if you'd like help installing the belt, I'd be more then happy to walk you through this.

If you found this helpful, it would be greatly appreciated if you rated the repair helpful, or left feedback.

Thanks so much,

Brushes won't turn and vacuum will not pick up sprayed cleaner

There's a Capt. Obvious fix to check before you go any farther. Like many vacuum cleaners, the brushes on the Bissell carpet cleaners, by design, only spin when the handle is not locked in the upright position, so be sure to plug it in, turn it on, and depress the foot pedal to lower the handle while watching the brushes one more time to be sure that the fix isn't that easy.

If the brushes still won't spin with the handle in the unlocked position, lift the handle back up into the locked position, power off and unplug the Bissell, and look down and see if either of the two belts that make the brushes spin are broken, as a broken belt, or a belt that's come off the track, is the next most likely problem. Both belts must be unbroken and in the right place for the roller brushes to spin.

These belts can be seen in the clear plastic pieces on either end of the roller brushes. If you're having trouble locating them, **with the Bissell unplugged so the brushes won't suddenly start spinning and hurt your hand**, try spinning the brushes with your fingers while watching for the belts. They're black, about the thickness of two quarters, and the bigger one of the two (on the left end of the roller brushes, as you face the front of the Bissell), is just big enough to fit around both roller brushes. The smaller belt, goes around the back roller brush on the right and to a smaller cog wheel behind it. If you see a broken belt, or a belt off the track, that's your problem.

Here's a video you can watch for free on Bissell's website that tells how to replace a belt. I'm sure the belts can be ordered online somewhere or found at some Bissell dealers or repair shops. Note, again, the two belts are different. If only one is broken, be sure to order the correct one.

If the belts are intact and in the right place, does the metal cog wheel behind the roller brush right turn when the Bissell is on and the handle is dropped? If not, then the motor that turns that cog wheel must be burned out.

Brush will not spin any longer

If the brush won't spin at all, it's either the drive belt or the roller beater brush is clogged. Pet hair can quickly clog a vacuum. Turn the unit over and see if the brush will rotate by hand. If yes, it's probably the belt. Also look for debris and clear as much out as possible. You may have to remove the bottom plate and clean the bottom of the unit out. If you do have to go that far, it would be best to replace the drive belt and thoroughly clean the vacuum.

I have a bissell proheat carpet cleaner purchased in 4-18-2005 for $169.99 from kohls I have used it 6 times and the last time the brushes would not move cause the belt was broken and the end of the pump...

That is something you would have to take up with Bissell. There is however no recall on the pump. They did change the pulley to a metal one. I know that if too much stuff coming off your carpet, or pet hair, will clog up the belt and pulley putting undo stress on the parts and can cause damage. Needs to be cleaned out once in a while.

Belt removal Bissel PowerSteam ProHeat

First take off the cover on the left side oif the top cover, then turn it over, remove the screw holding the red lock and pull the cap and brush roll out, remove the cap, remove the cogged belt, then you can put the new pump belt thru that slot, put over the pulley on the pump and then stretch it to go over the motor shaft. Then put back together.

*&^%&^ Belt won't stay on

Hi Ecomama,

Check your Brush, it may not be rolling freely.  I had to clean string and hair and fiber out from ar0und the ends to get the brush to roll  freely.  This will cause the belt to get hot and come off.  just clean out the Brush ends.
