Question about HP LaserJet 3600n Printer

1 Answer

Insufficient memory My HP Color Laserjet 3600n works fine with all applications (Word, Excel) but when used with MSWorks it cannot print and gives a Insufficient Memory error. I tried different computers with same printer, but still the same error message. I had a long chat with HP but they are not capable of solving the problem. This printer seems to have a Host based driver, meaning that it uses the memory of the computer for the printjob. This is no explanation for even a blank Works letter cannot be printed. In Word I can print complicated merged files, using a lot of memory space. Just opening a Works file with database fields in it, gives already a memory error. It seems to be connected with Works for the same file converted to Word has no problem. Anybody knowing this problem and a solution?

Re: Insufficient memory

If it's host based, that means when you print:

1) from word, your word document is converted to a series of characters, and sent to the printer.
2) from excel, same thing.
3) from works, it's converted to a bitmap, instead of characters, which can take up significantly more space on your drive.

My guess is that if you imported a photo into word, then tried to print it, you might face similar issues.

If so, it's time to free up some space on your hard drive, or purchase a second one, or add some physical memory to your PC.

Did you make sure the cartridges clicks in place? There are while plastic locks on each cartridge and hopefully they are not broken. Not expensive to purchase but major teardown to replace.

  • Use lower resolution, such as 600 dpi.
  • Enable or disable Send True Type as Bitmaps .
  • Disable the Print Optimization under Printer Properties => Advanced => Document Option .
Some more steps:
  • Try changing the personality type to Auto/PCL/PS in printer Control Panel.
  • If changing personality does not make any difference, remove the current driver completely (from Server Properties ), restart the system, and install PostScript (PS) driver.
  • While installing the printer driver, select the standard TCP/IP port if the default is HP Port , and vice-versa.
General troubleshooting tipsContinue to isolate the error by printing the job in question after applying each of the following suggestions:
  1. Remove any additional memory that has been added to the printer after being purchased. Refer to the User's Manual that was supplied with the printer for memory removal instructions.
