Thanks - but it is a bit more complicated. I have explained more in my new post.

    Hi bat1956,

Thanks for the info - I thought the licence was for one machine, didn't realise it was for that specific machine only. Yes, we had the laptop checked out by PC World. By the way, what does OEM mean?

  • mbox000-sas May 10, 2009

    Thanks Bat1956,

The laptop was bought when Vista first came out and was just out of warranty when it died. It was a Phillips and PC World said the repair would cost almost the same as a new machine so we dumped it.

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. Speaking of that, You might contact the laptop manufacturer, see if they will give you another opinion and a cost of repair. Vista hasn't been released too long ago, did you check at the time the thing died if there was still any warranty? (porbably expired since though)

I see you now have three posts on this same subject. But I will make my comment here on the first.
The copy of Vista that came pre-installed on the laptop was an OEM version. It is a form of piracy to install it on another computer. The exception would be if you had the laptop first and bought a retail copy of Vista that you installed on the laptop but I sense that is not the case.
You should backup any files that you wish to save to external media and reinstall XP on the desktop.
You said that the motherboard in the laptop was bad, are you sure of this? did you have it looked at by a servicer?

As long as it still has a recovery partition you can get it back to the factory settings. Make sure its turned off first now press and hold down the 0 (zero) key while powering on the computer. When the computer powers on the TOSHIBA HDD recover screen displays. Just follow the prompts ........cheers from Scott

I have packard bell note book and this morning logged on and it logged my off staright away and now i have no icons on my screen just a blue screen with the windows logo!! thanks

Your profile is corrupted . The easiest way to fix that is to reinstall Windows using the recovery cd that came with the notebook. If you have files that you can't lose then, before reinstalling, login as Administrator and copy all your files to an external memory stick.
How to login as Admin:
XP = press CTRL + ALT + DEL twice at the Welcome Screen and input your Administrator password (not your user one) in the classic logon window that appears.
Vista = http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-vista/logon-windows-vista-as-administrator/

Error : 10-FC12-0570 when i try to reinstall with the cds

Error 10-FC12-0570 on Toshiba satellite This error message means that the recovery utility was not able to read the data from the disc correctly, or wasn't able to write it to the hard drive.
The problem could be with the disc, the CD/DVD drive or the hard drive.

Solution:

Try copying the second disc using another system. If it's impossible: order for a new disc. If you can copy it, try using the copy to do the restore.

Try using a third party disk checker to verify the problem, is or is not, with the hard drive.

The best way would be to load the Windonws Vista discs, format the pc and reinstall.
(Vista Recovery Boot Cd is available free by Microsoft). Download it burn the Image .iso and run that disc. That disc will not restore the OS: run diagnostics on the HDD; once disk check is completed and repaired, proceed with the Recovery disks that you have.

HI I Have a toshiba p100 laptop. i have had to re-install using recovery disc, the computer would start then shut down. with computer connected to external monitor it runs throught start up then ' say's...

I have the same computer. Recently, it started shutting down without noticed after an hour use, sometime earlier after heavy use. I did a Google search and find out that some Toshiba has overheating problem, and it was recommended to clean it the heat sink. If that is dirty the heat can not escape. I used a vacuum cleaner to **** out the dirt. It worked after so far.
A year ago, I had an other problem, I upgraded the memory, I used the Vista memory test. It did not reported errors. It became unstable, it would run for weeks without problem when for no reason would give file read errors, and all kind of problems,... So I created a bootable USB drive with memtes on it. My Toshiba booted to a linux op. and run the "memtest". It reported error on my newly installed memory. ... I used the recovery disk to have a clean start.
Also, during those times and sometime after, I've got those message, your window can be start, do you want to rollback to a previous point. Many time that message can be ignored, and just persist to start Window normally. Eventually it will, (if you know that your memory is working). I hope this helped.

I need a clean installation of Vista

If I understand this correctly, If you are using the system restore, it will maintain the last operating system install. When you went from XP to Vista, XP is totally gone. So your only option the will arraise it to restore system and if successful should be just fine.(I know that you mentioned it didn't work) you may have to do a total reinstall with Vista. If you can locate the disc.
Now the part that is left in a particitlon is as you thought...XP unless you formatted the whole drive what you installed VIstA in which case you will have nothing.
As long as you have a COA sticker on your computer you can borrow a disk from someone who has dell, and call the microsoft number and explain that you reformatted and use another copy to put it in and they will get you through the activation. Use the numbers on your sticker.
Good luck please leave rating.; thank you

Blue screen.

It might be a software issue but it also be a hardware issue..especially memory error.
You need to reinstall your OS if can't restore using safemode & system restore. Or can't open windows anymore.
If you have another space harddisk install OS there: install antivirus & antispyware. copy files your files & format the drive. SOLVE
