Take a look at the settings on your camera. There should be a way to change the white balance. White balance is used when you shoot a photo in the direct sunlight. Have you ever noticed the whites in a picture suddenly look blue? This is because your white balance is turned off or not in the correct mode. The same goes for your pictures that look too white. Take out your camera guide if you have one and look up White balance. You should be able to find the correct settings for the pictures you are trying to take.
Hope this helps.

When shooting in daylight, view screen normal, resulting photo is "whited out", ok inside house in house lighting. Just started.

Look in settings for the ISO value. This is the speed of the 'film' and how it reacts to light. The higher the ISO, the better it can deal with low light conditions. A standard ISO for normal daylight would be ISO 200. Your is set to something like ISO 800 - 1600.

Better photos in florescent lighting

You need to adjust the white balance setting.
This is on the shooting menu.

The options on the white balance presets are.
Flash, Cloudy, Daylight, Fluorescent, Incandescent
Fluorescent is what you are looking for.
Remember to change it back to auto for outdoor shoting.
