To upgrade a motherboard... you would need to replace it with another one, on a motherboard you can upgrade memory, cpu, video card, hard drive, parts that are connected to it, but you don't really upgrade the motherboard itself..

Emachines t3958 wont power on

The green light means there is standby power to the motherboard.
Power button may be broken, does it 'click'?
With the case open, do any of the fans start, then stop?
If yes to the above, you may have a bad power supply. Can you borrow one to try?
Last test before it's the chip or mother board:
Remove the connectors for power from drives, video card, all but the motherboard (Do NOT disconnect small connectors on the motherboard, just POWER from the drives and video card)
Remove any expansion cards except video. Note where they go.
Try again. If it starts and fans run ok (video may not work but fans go normally.), shut it off, reconnect the video card. Try again, power off, connect or install one thing at a time until it stops running again. The last item plugged in is the culprit.
Always one item, power on, try it, then power off, try the next one.

I have a emachine t3958 it will not turn on

Your power supply has gone out. This could have been caused by a surege, dust or bad power outlet.

You can purchase a replacement off eBay for under $25.00.

Emachines t3958, bad ram, green stand-by only no boot

Are you saying you bought 2 more machines to fix the problem? I don't understand. Do you have the manual for the machine. How long did your system run before a Ram stick went bad? What brand and size are your Ram sticks. Are they identicle? As far as Clearing BIOS, your manual should show you the jumper position to do this, which you will leave in this ( drain ) position for a minute. Powering up from here you need to immediately hit a key to send you to BIOS most are <del> or F10 or alt esc. You must look in your manual for this and then all your boards should work. If you need my help in finding your manual, give me all numbers pertaining to your machine.

Motherboard of my T3958 E-machine was destroyed by a power surge. Want to replace it with a stronger more effiecient one, but don't know the measurements of the first one.

simply replace it with a motherboard of micro ATX form factor. that should fit most system chasis. Most mother boards these days come in that size

Emachine will not power up

By nothing else, from a technical standpoint this would mean literally nothing, the CPU fan, power supply fan, aux fan, disk drive not spinning up, etc. My experience with EMachines is their motherboards aint the best, have been known to take out hard drives and other peripherals to the mother board. If you are technically inclined the first thing to do is to bare out the system, Power Supply attached to the Mother Board w/ Cpu Monitor and Keyboard no Hard Drive and no Non esential boards installed, very carefully remove the memory and start it up all should be fine except it should give you a long beep from the PC Speaker indicating the Mother Board is aware there is no memory installed if it will not do this most basic of tests this is not good. If it does give you a health beep continue to install one item at a time, first the memory, the display should, if working, tell you there is a boot failure, of course, the hard drive is not connected, do so and keep on testing. Without knowing what type of mother board you have, most likely an AT with integrated peripherials the process to determine exactly what the problem is would take hands on trouble shooting. If you dont get the beep indicating the mother board cant determine if memory is installed and truley nothing else is on it is more likely the mother board. There are several good ones online that will fit your case if you want to go this route. Or is it time to upgrade ?

Can not find heat sink switches on motherboard emachine t2862

Heat sink switches? I have to assume that you're talking about a dead mother board but the fans and the LED on the mother board are OK? This is a classic eMachines problem. Their power supplies glitch and take out the mother board sometimes the power supply goes bad too.

Emachine t3958

First check to see if a drive died. Unplug all the drive Floppy, hard and dvd or burns. I have come across many time that a drive will die and keep motherboard from booting. Being that you say you get a green light on the motherboard shows that the power suppy is providing some power. But for some reason the internal self test is faulting the power suppy. I have not come cross any bad power supplies killing a motherboard. But I have come across power supplies killing drives. The power switch is a normal open switch so the only time you be able test continuity on it is if you hold the switch in, or the closed position.
