Hello

HAve you Checked the Valve Clearances on the Dead Cylinder?
If the Valve Clearances are Not Correct, then you will have a Dead Cylinder as you Described.
I No Longer Suggest Rebuilding Engines.
The Cost of Parts and MAchine Shop Work is Usually More than a Short Block or Complete Engine.
Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance.
Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Be Happy. Thanks.

It starts and runs but gets hot and quits

the only way for an air cooled motor to get hot is from the cooling fins on the head and cylinder to be blocked from straw and mud
remove the cowl on the motor over the fly wheel and clean it all out

You have a dead machine... seriously your engine has had a catastrophic mechanical failure and will need to be completely disassembled/rebuilt. Sorry for the bad news, but I didnt want you to waste time chasing a ghost.

Briggs & Stratton Engine on riding mower started making a loud clanking noise and started to smoke just before I shut the engine off.

Piston rings need to be replaced. Which also means there will also be damage to the bore. This will also require repair, or it will always use oil, be very smokey & fowl the sparkplug. Replacement parts are quite expensive. In my experience with Briggs motors. they are great while they are new, yet when they start giving probs, then it is time to replace it. I have 5 machines with motors ranging from 5hp to 18hp. All were originally purchased with Briggs motors, but after about 12 months are replaced with Honda's. Each machine does about 20hrs/week & are replaced at about 18months.

Riding mower with 26hp briggs and stratton motor runs about 20 to 30 minutes thens cuts out

It sounds electrical in nature check the solenoid for continuity, check your key switch it may be bad also, check the spark plug wires and the part they hook into. Look for melted wires and replace as needed.

Replacing engine. Briggs 26hp on GT5000 garden tractor

Unfortunately, there is no single manual for this. It depends entirely on what crankshaft the OEM requested be used in the engine. You need to find out the diameter of the crankshaft and any threading to it, direction of the threading, etc. From there, a replacement can usually be found pretty easily. That or contact Briggs customer support (number in your owners manual) with the Model, Type and Code numbers off the engine. From this information they can see how the engine was outfitted for that OEM. Horsepower tells them nothing as those ratings and stickers are often replaced by the OEM and often NOT the information Briggs sends out on the engine.
