Automatically zooming in

My Elura 60 camcorder zooms in tight on what I want film.  I can zoom back out but shortly after i take my finger off the zoom control the arrow points to  T and starts zooming in.  I can get it to stop by holding the button a little toward the W but when I let go it zoom in again.   The botton moves freely to T and W  it just wants to zoom in by itself.   Is this a setting that has been turned on or is broke?

I have the same problem and any help would be appreciated. What is the cost for repairs? Is it worth it or should I buy another unit?

Have an Elura 60 - it is doing the same thing and is out of warranty. Any other suggestions?

    I laugh out loud

I too have recently experienced this very condition with the zoom (circa May 16th). I tried the advice of hitting it and it worked! Just a light tap.

This tapping method also cured a previous speaker issue I had....

...Looks like they still build things the way the used to

My camera sticks in fade to T (max zoom) almost as soon as I remove my finger from the button. I had to "duct-tape" the button in order to video tape. Any suggestions ???

My Elura 65 has just started to do the same thing, it just zooms at its own; I counteract this problem by sliding the zoom control the other way until it stops, it feels ackward though; Has Canon found out the root cause of this apparently common problem? If so, please advise how to repair it. if(typeof(dstb)!= "undefined"){ dstb();}

Those who suggest hitting the camera right where the zoom button is are correct, oddly enough.  I cant explain it, but it worked in a real jam.  Maybe not a good long-term solution, when you need things to work.  But in the short-term, it really saved me from big problems.   I just removed the battery and cassette, then slapped lightly the camera on the offending area.   It may be useful to note that my "remove cassette" message was also accompanied by a zooming in, which could only be stopped by pressing the zoom button to one side.
Thanks to the person who recommended the hitting method.

Hello:

I contacted Canon about this same issue in my Elura 65, and they said to send it to them, they would have their techs investigate the cause and then contact me with the costs to make the repairs. They said that if I didn't want them to repair the problem, after I found out the cost, that they would reassemble the camera and send it back.

Mine is out of warranty, even with buying it at Costco, who doubles the warranty time. In my researching the problem, I have found another person with the same problem who had it repaired for something like $175. I will weigh that against purchasing a newer model.

Someone else did reccommend wacking in on the top a few times, shutting if off and turning it back on, and that would often fix the problem. I don't want to take the chance of ruining an important shot that may not come around again, by having to Indian Leg Wrestle my camera to get it to work. Best wishes.

The zoom assembly will need to be replaced. This repair should be done by an experienced technician. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix that you can do yourself.

Hope this helps you.

My Elura somehow is zooming in all the time. I can back it out slowly but as soon as I take my finger off - it zooms in again. Please let me know how to fix this. Thanks

the zoom in rocker is stuck, its a physical problem, you need to try cleaning it with surgical alcohol and an ear bud. or take it to a camera repair shop.

Zoom button of canon elura minin dv

I had a similar problem. Searching Google for a solution, I came across the old -- "if it doesn't work, smack it" trick:

Remove any tape in the camera.
Remove the battery.

With your hand holding the top of camera, hit it firmly with a book on the bottom. I used about a 200 page paperback.

I suspect it is a electro-mechanical switch that gets stuck in the "On" position, and a little jolt frees it up again.

I have done this twice in the last month, and it works great.

Elura 60 doesn't take still pictures

I had a similar problem with zoom being stuck and also not being able to take a still. I tried the suggestion of whacking it in the area of the zoom and photo button and it started working.

I just tapped it with two fingers. Sounds odd but it worked. good luck

Canon Elura 60 zooms by itself

Listen, I know it's a couple of years after this post but, try this: Remove cassette, push to close, close camera as if to use it, hold firmly in left hand, open hand slap it with your right hand once or twice, (I'm not joking) it worked the two times I had this problem. Problems with the zoom? Almost same process, push firmly on zoom button (to un-zoom) try doing this as your tapping it. These are last ditch efforts on an aging camera, it really has been a good one. I've put this poor thing through years of abuse, and it's held up pretty well. Good luck, Jeff S.

Zooming problem

I have the same problem. I have no fix in rec mode but if it happens during playback; press menu and select the zoom options. You don't have to pick any but just keep the menu displayed on the screen. I do this while recording the tape to my DVD recorder and it solves the locked zoom problem. The menu display does not get recorded.
This zoom problem is a big pain. We should start a class action suit against Canon. It started within a year of ownership with mine. I bought a Panasonic recently and haven't looked back.
Panasonic doesn't have the slick Canon marketing/packaging but it is a much better machine.
