Question about Panasonic Portable Radio/Cassette Player

Open Question

Tascam porta one play transport system won't stay in play position, stops within seconds.Capstan moving, all other functions seem fine.

Hello. My problem is with my tascam porta one.I have a small studio, and I decided to turn on and use my porta one tonight, and it hasn't been used for some time, but the play transport won't stay in the play position. It wants to stop constantly.Rewind and fast forward, and all other things seem to work fine.I know years ago,it would occassionaly lock up,so I was told by a music store to take the back off,and turn this big wheel clockwise, till it clicks. That's when the play transport locked up,but now it won't even stay in the play position at all.The capstan is moving,if that's of any help. Thanks Sharron

SOURCE: 1) I turn on the power and place a prerecorded

If it is not a bad soldering joint somewhere, it could be the mode switch. They can sometimes be cleaned with Servisol Video 40, but you might have to replace it.

Tascam 122MkIII has flashing lights, does not run.

The problem is a lack of movement in the transport to tell the controller that it has completed it cycle. This is most of the time caused by the grease they used and sometimes a gear with broken teeth on it. These gears have been discontinued and I am having some made but it will take a few months to set up. I do have some in stock right now for repairs. The transport will need to be cleaned of old grease and new grease put into it. They also suffer from decaying capstan surface mount caps. These are replaced when I do the gear correction. After that they are good decks.

Tascam 122MKIII Cassette player/recorder is malfunctioning.

I have one here at my shop that does the same thing almost. I found a gear broken in the mechanism system. The flashing LEDs tells you that the system control IC can not get the transport where it is suppose to go. The Gear C as described in the manual was the problem in the deck here. The head base was in the up position in this unit and thus would not eject. My E mail is skywavebe@sbcglobal.net. Due to the amount of dis-assembly to get to the transport control section this might be a job for a technician.

I have a Teac A-6300 that won't go fast forward or reverse but the capstan motor is running

The Capstan motor is just for the play speed regulation so it has nothing to do with the reel motors. You can have an open safety microswitch or maybe a bad relay. It is really hard to say without looking at the unit but I am sure it is repairable. Is the right dummy plug put in the back? This can stop all transport functions if it is out.

Tape heads are stuck will not disengage. transport will rew and fast forward but will not play or record. also could not eject tape. unit is a tascam porta one mini studio.

There is a cam system in the transport and they need to be lubricated. It might cost more than $100 to fix. Sometimes the gears have rounded off teeth that you can not get anymore.

The auto stop mechanism seems to have completely stopped working. When play a cassette, it eats it. When you put the deck into play mode without a cassette and push on the pinch roller with your finger, it...

When's the last time it was cleaned? It surely needs it now.

Never touch the any part of the transport that directly contacts the tape with bear fingers.

This sounds like a failure of the take-up (left) reel to take up slack as it's fed in by the capstan.

You can probably trust the machine to fast forward or rewind a tape to test the ability of the reels to manage slack since either action only requires one reel to pull while the other just coasts. Failure would look like stationary tape that eventually would time out and reset the command.

If it won't do fast transport motions that eliminates the capstan/pinch roller.

If it CAN FF and REW then the capstan, pinch roller, heads or something is probably glommed up with sticky tape oxide, which brings us back to the first question.

Stuck tape in Tascam Porta One

It sounds like the rubber belt drive may have broken and tangeled in the drive mechanism. If you are confident you can disassemble it far enough to see if thats what happened. You can still obtain replacement belts. If not from Tascam, then try a good electronics store. Take the belt in and they can help you match it up. Thers also a possibility that your pause mechanism id stuck.

I noticed 3 belts in there and I replaced the easy one, the others look and feel fine, FF and REW work and move the drive posts, but the post doesn't move when on PLAY, the capstan and all 3 belts move, but the drive post doesn't move (the one that goes into the cassette wheels)
