Hello everybody:) I read all th comments and just listened to your advice. I smack the camera once and it starts working! Just for the protocol: this is typical for Russian cameras to repair after hit them.

I hit the camera a few times just with my hands and then it works....That's unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!
I also spent some time fixing this error. the reboot thing as suggested in the manual did not work! Then I smacked it gently on the metal part of the camera, then again more strongly. Suddenly it started to work! Never thought of that way repairing the camera from HP... Try it but not break it!
Well, we all had a good laugh when I found this site! It was absolutely too funny. My friend told me to go ahead and try it since after having 3 frustrating hours trying ti fix the darn thing, I really had nothing to lose. So............. I gave the thing a couple smacks and nothing happened. I smacked it again and...........Voila!!! Success!!. It reminds me of my college days when I had to smack the dashboard of my Ford Fairmont to get it to start! Too funny! Thanks for brightening my Mother's Day!!!
This was a very annoying problem for me too. HP support over the phone told me I'd have to pay for support and all I wanted to do was reset the camera! I found the solution at the hp troubleshooting site.
- remove the battery
- remove the memory card
- insert a paperclip into the tiny hole next to the location of the battery
- hold the paperclip in for 3-6 seconds. no pictures were lost!!
yerrr, happened to me too.. did some serious googling for few minutes and wondered to this page.. got the same error with red background and just a minor slap below the lense worked.. amazing isn´t it B>

The smacking worked for like one day, then the camera died completely. Won't even stay on long enough now to see the error message.

I have a HP photsmart R742, when I put the battery in it says lens error, report code R740-033. How do I fix this?
I had that problem also. It started when I dropped the camera. But as weard as it sounds, I just hit the camera a few times, not hard, and it started to work again.

I had the same error message. I attempted to "reset" my camera and that didn't work. I tried the other suggestion of hitting it, not too hard, and it works. funny.
