New to expresso machine - Cuisinart EM100c

Hi there,
I just bought a Cuisinart EM100C expresso maker yesterday and I'm totally new to this. I tried to rinse the machine as instructed for the first time use. When I turned the machine on, I heard a noise right after I pressed the Start button [2 seconds], then I waited until the light is off, I poured cold water down the reservoir and followed the instructions to turn the knobs... then I hear the same noise for about 5 seconds and still no water coming out. I was worried so I turned the machine off right away. Is it normal to hear the loud brewing noise during the entire process?

This is a very loud machine. Here's the normal operation: You turn it on, and wait a few minutes for it to heat up, at which point the heating light will go off. Then make sure the function knob is turned to coffee, and it will start brewing. At first, it will make a short (loud) sound and then stop for a second. The purpose behind this is that the machine is pre-wetting the coffee, so that steam can more easily shoot through it in a couple of seconds. Then the loud noise will start again and run continuously until you turn the function knob back to the center. So, the sounds you were hearing were normal. There is a delay between when you hear the sounds and the water starts flowing out. If the coffee is pressed down (tamped) too hard, that delay will be longer. Hope this helps. You made a much better choice purchasing this machine rather than the more expensive EM-200, in my opinion.

I did all of the above. Where is the knob to the left on water or steam or is it shut off

Recently bought a used Cuisinart DGB500 and do not have a manual. I should be able to figure out the controls but believe there is supposed to be a water filter. No sign of one that I can find. Also, does...

Yes. the paper filter absorbs yhe oils and traps fine sediments. Look up how expresso machines work by typing it in the search bar. It may refresh your nenory. Good Luck

I have a Cuisinart DCC-1200 coffee maker. It's worked flawlessly, but we just moved and when we arrived at our new house, we plugged it in and ....NOTHING! It acts like there is no power to the machine....

Most likely totally dead, but:

Here is the basic troubleshooting for the Cuisinart coffee makers:
Make sure all baskets are in proper place – especially if unit is beeping.
Do not use a paper and a gold-tone or other permanent filter at the same time.
Unplug for LONGER THAN 15 full minutes to reset.
Clean by brewing 2 oz of distilled white vinegar/2 oz water.
If these methods fail, the unit probably requires replacement – call Cuisinart as they have a longer-than-standard warranty.

Totally dead machine.

You have not missed anything. Unplugging for longer than 16 minutes (has 15-minute memory) is the only troubleshooting you can perform. Call Cuisinart to find out if you are still in warranty. All electronics have a failure rate. Cuisinart's is acceptably low, but their coffee makers are the least reliable of all their products. The basic problem with electronic coffee makers is that coffee makers produce high heat, and high heat kills electronics and melts plastic. At least Cuisinart has a 3-year warranty - higher than the industry standard.

Let me put it another way. All coffee makers have a high failure rate. As many Cuisinart coffee makers that break down, the non-Grind-and-Brews still have a 91 rating from Consumer Reports. Consumer Reports doesn't give ANYTHING a 91 rating. A lot break, but you probably won't fare much better by switching to a different brand. The problem with a Cuisinart breaking down is that an expensive unit broke down - you wouldn't be upset if your $15 Mr. Coffee broke every year. The law of averages is on your side - a 2nd Cuisinart will probably last longer.
