Zoom X6 Password change and Firmware Update

The modem works well but I have been unable to change the password.  The PW change utility requests inputing the old PW once, then twice for the new PW.  Click on Save Changes, then Write to Flash.  All are done as directed in the instructions and even get a message indicating success, but the old password remains. 

 

I Attempted to update the Firmware in hopes of fixing the problem and ran into another.  Directions include downloading a zip that results in a .tar file that is supposed to be used in the update.  When I browse and select the .tar file as directed in the instructions, it provides the following:

Firmware Update FailedArchive contains invalid file. No error

Read 1832960 bytes. Written 0 bytes of 668768

 

I've downloaded the update file twice and even extracted from the .tar file without success.  I've rebooted, reset and hard reset without success. 

 

I submitted a question to Zoom tech support a couple of days ago but have not gotten a response.  I've also attempted their "live chat" tech support and get a count-down on the que from 2 to 1 and finally "no technician available" after about 10 minutes.  Several tries later and extensive info required with each attempt, I gave up and called.  Similar experience, they tell you all techs are busy and please hold, then 10 minutes later you get voicemail. 

 

Strongly recommend steering clear of zoom products and tech support.  Try Linksys or other real company.

    Finally got a response from Tech support via email to my question.  They suggested a beta version of firmware update but failed to attach it as indicated in the message.  Another round of email and attachment arrived.  It worked as promise in both updating firmware and allowing PW change.  What an ordeal!!!  Hopefully there are no more bugs.



     



    Tech support excerp:  5590CF-X6 beta code T34. We have a quick verified in the code that it has addressed the following.

    Fixed:
    1-Allow to change admin password.
    2-Allow to change port other than 80 for the remote management.
    3-Autodetect will save the 1st initial setting even after reboot. That it will not trigger to rerun the autodetect.
    4-Virtual Server setting will not dissappear after reboot.
    5-Has new DSP version E25.41.18. We think that it will address the Autodetect G.dmt without forcing it.

    The Zoom site only offered on firmware update download for the US.  IT WOULD NOT LOAD.  Following the Zoom instructions, I would get an error after from the X6 that the file was invalid.  I don't know if it has ever worked for anyone, or if it was specific to my router.  The tech database did not address the issue of PW change nor the firmware download file not working. 



     



    All is well now, but had I known I would spend 6 hours "fixing" the X6 I would have gone another route.  My desire was to consolidate from a modem and router  to a single box just to declutter.  The X6 is missing one feature I used on my Linksys.  That's the DynDNS.  I will use software to compensate, but...

    Zoom told us to change the password via the telnet shell. they claimed to have a fix and email us in 24hours, this was 3 weeks ago. still no fix.

I managed to change the password using the telnet solution as per the zoom website

Alternatively, the Admin password can be changed via the modem's command line interface:

1. Access the command prompt on your computer:

Windows users:

* From the Start menu, select Run...
*
Type cmd (Windows 2000/XP/2003 Server/Vista) or command (Windows 9x/Me), and click OK.

At the ">" prompt, type telnet 10.0.0.2 and press Enter.

Mac OS X users:

*
Open the Terminal application, which is inside the Applicaitons/Utilities folder.

At the "$" prompt, type telnet 10.0.0.2 and press Enter (or Return).

2. When the CONEXANT screen appears, enter the default Login (Username) and Password:

Login: admin
Password: zoomadsl

3. At the "-->" prompt, type user password and press Enter.

4. Type a new password and press Enter.

5. Re-type the new password and press Enter.

6. Finally, type system config save and press Enter. Your new password will now be saved.

Yes you are right. I agree with you. Real tech support really matters. 

 I would like to add information about what you did when you downloaded the firmware, there are certain firmware for its problem. One firmware is design to fix this particular problem . Are there firmware version and short description on the website? You might run accross one that fixes "saving problem on User interface" that might be the solution. But you are indeed on the right track. its just that the website of Zoom maybe is not that detailed and userfriendly.

How do i open the config manager


Try this:
To access the Zoom Configuration Manager (web-based configuration utility) on the Zoom DSL modem:
  1. Close any open programs including antivirus and pop-up blockers.
  2. Open a web browser, and in its address bar, type http://10.0.0.2 (or http://192.168.0.1 for Zoom ADSL X6v users) and then press Enter (or Return).
  3. In the Enter Network Password dialog box, type the following username and password in lowercase then click OK. (Note: The modem User Name and Password you enter here are NOT the same as the User Name and Password that your Internet service provider may have given you.)
    • User Name: admin
    • Password: zoomadsl (where "l" is a lowercase letter L)

Lost user name and password for configuration manager


You ADSL Modem's default username is admin and password is zoomadsl, If you have changed before you can reset the the device so default username and password will work. for further information you can check link below

you have to log in http://10.0.0.2 at the button/under of your router tells you the generic name and password you need to enter, just follow the instructions, you'll be able to change your settings

USB Modem V ADSL Router/Modem


Unplug the plug (from phoneline) on back of USB modem, plug into Zoom router. Plug one end of an ethernet cable into router and one end into your PC. Type http://10.0.0.2 into a web browser (eg. Firefox or Internet explorer) username/password is admin/zoomadsl go to basic setup and input your ISP username and password (the one given to you by your internet provider) under PPP. Click configure my connection. Save changes and then write to flash (both buttons on bottom of page)

DSL light flashing constantly


Hi,

I had the same problem to begin with. Here is what the Zoom helpdesk suggested:
"To force the dsl light to stop blinking, please follow these steps.

1) Open up your web browser and type 10.0.0.2 in the address bar. Type in the the username and password to log in to the modem.
username: admin
password: zoomadsl

2) When you get to the address bar, Click on advance setup.

3) Click on ADSL Configuration.

4) Change the standard to G.Dmt and change the activate line to Start.

5) Save changes and then write settings to flash.

Within a 1 or 2 minutes, the dsl light should go solid."

This worked for me. Good luck.

Problem with password change


Check your manual if you have the option to change your password. Also try if there is a reset switch; dont do thiese unless you have properly noted down settings particular informations on ISP for your ruter to connect properly again.

Hi, With or without the firmware update, the wireless should work and be indicated with the WLAN led. Have you done an update? Have you tried a hard reset? Most routers would require a reset to default after a firmware update. Pls be reminded that when you do a hard reset, all configuration would be lost, better log them down or do a backup. Alternately, you can check your router's web based configuration manager, apparently, there is an enable/disable feature/selection for the WLAN. Verify that is set to enable. Hope this be of help/idea. Post back how things turned out or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards.
