Error when installing printer: Cannon iP4600

Hi, I was trying to install my Canon PIXMA Printer (Model: iP4600). I am using Vista as my OS. I inserted my installation CD, followed all the instructions on the disk and in the end it popped up a window saying: Printer Driver: An error occured while files were being copied. I restarted my computer and tried setting up for my driver and once again the same alert came up. Thanks.

Thank you so much rjbeg123. That was very helpful.

I went to the site and tried downloading the driver directly from the web instead. However the same error message still popped out. I guess there must be something wrong with my computer. I have already e-mailed Canon's support team. Hopefully they will get back to me asap. In the worst case, I'll just have to bring it back to Staples and ask for a refund or something :-(

Thanks for helping me out once again! I really appreciate that. Just now I plugged in the USB chord which is connected with my Canon printer into my laptop and turned on my printer. Windows tried installing the driver without the installation disk but unfortunately the attempt wasn't quite sucessful so I requested Windows to look up for a solution through Microsoft and apparently they don't have an solution for me either. Instead it suggested me to go to Canon's site and contact them directly. I had a HP Printer (HP Photosmart C5100 All-in-One Printer) before replacing it with Canon and I didn't had trouble installing the printer drivers at all. Maybe the driver for HP is crashing with Canon? I think chances are pretty low right? It would be really stupid if you can only install one printer on one computer..

Yeah, I tried it last night. The problem was under installation of drivers. And there it wrote it couldn't find the software for the driver. It shows a report was already sent out. I right-clicked on the problem and see if there's an immediate solution to it, but there's none.

I disabled user account control and then restarted my computer. Tried installing the driver from Canon's site and it didn't work at first. Restart again and it worked! My computer is a very very odd machine. I probably yelled at it too much last night. He's finally co-operating with my new printer.

A million thanks! You're the best techie alive =)

I would go to Canon USA below is the direct link and download the driver from there. It sounds like you have a bad disk, or it's not Vista compatible.. No proplem they are always updating drivers and have them for free. I would give you a direct link to the download but they need you to specify whether your running a 32 or 64 bit version. Click on this link select your operating system and you will be able to download and install the latest drivers and software for your printer. Here you go:

Sorry about that, In vista when you go to your control panel you should see an icon that says problem reports and solutions, it looks like a computer with a yellow exclamation mark and a green check. Try opening that, the first section of that relates to install errors and should tell you what the error is and possible solutions for it. Give that a try I'll check back and see how your doing. It might be a compatability issue with another program or Vista security as well.

You can install a lot of printers, at work I have all of the printers and copiers on the network installed on my machine so I can test them. Did you have a chance to check the 'problem reports and solutions' icon on your control panel yet?

  • rjbeg123 May 10, 2009

Go back to the first link I sent you to . There are 4 software packages that your disc should have installed for you. All 4 are available at the site, I would try downloading them individually, and installing them. Then turn on the printer and see if you can get it to install this time. It really shouldn't be this hard! I make purchasing get hp and epson printers as they seem to be the easiest to install! If you downloaded the driver make sure you saved it in an easy place to find. Did you double click on the driver after you downloaded it? You need to as it is an .exe file it should install itself. The only other thing I can think to try is to go into your control panel, double click on your security center icon. Under other security options turn off user account control. Say yes when it asks if your sure. Now try and install. I run all of the Vista machines with it off as it frequently causes compatability and install issues. Beyond that I'd have to be at your machine to put it through the paces and figure out what the issue is. Good luck!

Vista 32 bit with canon pixma ip4600, unable to detect printer

Try adding the printer via the Printers tab under Control Panel.

Click on Add Printer

Select Local Port: USB001(Virtual Printer Port for USB)

Wait for the Next Dialog Box to pop up and select the Have Disk Button.

Then go to where ever you have your driver located I used the one on the CD provided with printer, and follow the bouncing ball so to speak.

Hope this helps.
