  1. Maybe you need to restart your computer and try to add hardware in control panel.
  2. try to unplug and plug again your usb connection to your hd and computer. There's some possibility that your usb cable or something relating to it is error.
  3. Is it need a driver?. If so, install the driver.

I have a dell laptop and a HP desktop computer, and a 1TB Iomega external hard drive. THE PROBLEM..the video folders/files can be accessed on the laptop but not on the desktop ? the folders are empty

Hi,
it might be that the files are hidden and the option on the desktop to show hidden files is not enabled.. Try enabling hidden files and folders. Start--Control Panel--- Folder Options---View and then enable hidden files and folders.
Hope it helps,

There could be several problems going on here. Try this first If still unsuccessful you may need to run chkdsk in windows (XP or 7). This will unlock the protection bit on the ntfs file system and the disk should be fine. If there is a problem chkdsk will tell you. Also always remember to eject or safely remove external hard drive.

I have a white light on my iomega external harddrive. My computer does not recognize it. Is my data recoverable?

There is a chance that the only thing that isn't working on the external hard drive is the actual controller of the enclosure. What you could try doing is opening up the external hard drive to get at the actual drive that's inside. Go online and look for something called an IDE to USB adapter. They are usually relativly cheap, 10-20 bucks. This will plug into the back of the hard drive and then to the computer with a usb cable. See if the drive is readable. or if you have another open SATA port in your desktop computer, just try connecting it as a secondary hard drive. See if it will read it.

Dropped an Iomega 500gig external hard drive...

Hello,

From what I can deduce here, it seems that you the hard drive probably has a bad sector on it.

That clicking sound that you are hearing from the Hard Drive is coming from the read/write head inside the hard drive.

In this case, what I would advise you to do is, unscrew the hard drive case and remove the Hard disk from the case, connect it directly to a system, not externally or through USB this time around, then get a software called NTFS DOS Professional. It is a software that works like magic when it comes to hard drive repairs.

If you know any other hard drive utility, apart from this, you can also use it. I just recommend this personally because that is what I use.

Insert it into your PC, start up your CD-ROM and let your system boot from CD-ROM.

It works through DOS, and it should be able to help you with it.

If this does not solve the problem, then I'm afraid you might need to replace the hard drive.

And if it repairs it, I would suggest that you just retrieve all your valuable files from it and don't fully rely on the hard drive again because of the hardware error it has developed. Just keep using it as a second.

If you cannot do this by yourself, just get a very good technician to do it for you instead.

Kindly keep me posted about the problem.

Hope it helps.

Goodluck.

well..allowing is maybe close, but this is most likely a bandwidth from the laptop to the external drive..how do you have them connected? USB Ethernet? for that type of file size, you may find Enet to be the best, or USB 2.0

No Power to External Hard Drive

Do you have access to a multimeter or voltmeter? If you do you can check the voltage coming out of the adapter and make sure it matches what the power adapter says it is. If it doesn't, then it is the power adapter. If it does, then it is the drive or enclosure.
