Sorry, my tractor is a 1945 2n tractor - 4 cylinders - it starts up, runs great on level ground, but spits and sputters when trying to go up a hill. emphazing trying to go up a hill because it will not pull itself on even a small incline. Could it be the govenor?

Please describe how old, etc., and any markings on the tractor, etc.

    Horsepower? Cylinders, etc. etc.

Does it run OK on level ground?

I suspect the float bowl. If the float is flooded or set too low the carburetor will suck air instead of gasoline. I\'d do a caburetor rebuild if you can find the kit. I got mine for my 2N (1946) at a local Tractor Supply store for $14 and it really put new life in it! Next, I\'d check the timing, but that\'s a slim chance since your tractor starts and runs. If the spark were too advanced, it\'d backfire and sputter. If the timing were too retarded it\'d start fine but have little power

Please check the fuel bowl for water!  If it's finally full of water and you get on a hill, the water will flood out the engine and starve it of gasoline.  same thing with the fuel tank, water from condensation can collect at the bottom of the tank and be ok until you get on a slope and the water will clog the fuel strainer, just a thought!

God bless,

Need to replace 9n tractor starter when you turn ignition key the starter just keeps going around.

I suggest that you pull the starter and make sure the bendix unit isn't stuck on the shaft which may be rusted or dirty and corroded first. If the starter spins then the starter itself is probably okay. Hope this helps you

Ford 601 cuts out few minutes after start up name is Keith..and i restore 9N's,2N's and 8N's...but the systems are basically the know and i know its either ignition or fuel..on the ignition side..i would suspect either the condensor or coil is breaking down when the engine gets hot...and on the fuel side..if you have already cleaned the carb..i would suspect trash in the fuel tank or trash in your sediment bowl and valve..which can be cleaned or replaced..i hope this will help..its the simplest thing to check or replace..if it didnt help..please write back

8n tractor runs good at first then after awhile starts to sputte

Check fuel filter in the shut off bowl. Then check the needle and seat in the fuel sediment bowl on the bottom of the carb. Also check the float when you pull off the sediment bowl.
