the notebook was working fine, then one day when it was powered up it asked for a password.
toshiba wants to charge $425 to reset it as its no longer under warranty.
they admit its a known problem with some models but they still want to charge me.
any help would be appreciated

- there isn't a toshiba service center for 250 miles and all the local service shops don't have a service manual for it. one shop tried to disassemble it but couldn't figure out how to separate the top cover even though all the screws were removed.
there has to be a couple of pins that can be shorted to reset the password.
if CMOS battery is removed and placed again..the problem will be solved....if u know any computer experts means.... i.e., local service engineers...ask them to do this
You could try to re-flash the BIOS from this link, The newest version of the BIOS does have a fix for "Added a workaround to cover incorrect EEPROM data that causes a password to be set." Also, call back Toshiba tech and tell them to look up Support Bulletin Document ID 98082632 - it specifically states that "Toshiba will cover the cost of this repair under warranty until Dec 31, 2010." - that reads to me as though they are "extending" the warranty specifically for this issue. If they give you grief, ask for escalation - first-line tech support often doesn't have the power or initiative to go deeper than surface level... Good luck!!
