Jac, my suggestion is this. The "reverse" gear in the transmission has locked up. The burning smell is coming from the belt. The motor is trying to spin the belt to turn the tranny but it won't turn 'cause it's locked up this causes the belt to burn.
If it's less than 5 years old, the tranny is under warranty. Contact Frigidaire and give them the full model and serial number and schedule a repair. (ask them to bring a belt with them when they come. you'll need one.)
