Is there another memory slot under the keyboard?

I discovered that some laptops have a slot for memory under the keyboard. How would I know if mine does without actually taking the keyboard off? Also- if a laptop has 2 slots for memory on the back then would it also have another slot under the keyboard? I have a Dell inspiron B130. Thanks, Elizabeth

I have a HP NC6120 laptop and am tring to upgrade the RAM, I found one card slot, but, don't know where the second socket is. do you?

Hello, and thanks for using FixYa.

If the 2nd slot is not in the bottom of the laptop, then you will find it from under the keyboard.

According to HP specifications of the laptop the memory is Upgradeable to 2048-MB maximum (1024-MB SODIMM in slots 1 and 2) So yes the laptop does have two memory slots. It will be under the keyboard.

Please let me know if you require further assistance or if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Ekse

The other memory slot is under the keyboard. Below is the service manual that has the full disassembly instructions for thelaptop. You can see the memory module installation on page 83. Just follow the guide on keyboard removal, the slot will be visible when the keyboard is removed.

How to fit memory to laptop compaq armada e500

most hp/compaq laptops will have memory slots located under the keyboard, and sometimes an additional memory slot accessed through a panel on the bottom of the notebook.
In your case, you have 2 memory slots located under the keyboard. Officially, this unit only supports up to 256 mb memory modules for a maximum of 512 MB of memory so if you already have that, be aware that larger capacity memory modules may not work.

My HP Pavilion zt1170 fails to boot 90% of the time. Once power was turned on, I could hear the fan run for one second and stopped. No video, yet the LED was on. It seems like it froze. Occasionally, it...

I also have a ZT 1170 and it began to do the same thing. It was a bad solder joint in the RAM slot connector in the bottom of the laptop. It would intermittently cause the laptop to hang on bootup, or to randomly lockup.
This laptop has two slots for RAM. One is underneath the laptop behind a small access door, and the other is under the keyboard and requires removal of the keyboard to access it.
To find out if your laptop problem is due to the same issue, open the bottom access panel and remove the bottom RAM memory card. Try booting it up. It should still be able to run, although more slowly due to having less RAM. If it starts up, you are closer to isolating the problem.

In my case, I initially thought I had a defective RAM card, so I purchased another 256Mbyte card for the laptop (mine came with two 256Mb cards), but the new card had the same problem. Then I discovered that pressing down on the RAM card would momentarily fix the problem, which clued me in on it being a bad connection. It seems that heat under the laptop causes some of the solder connections between the memory slot connector and the main PC board to develop hairline cracks. I was able to find the cracked joint and resolder it, but you almost need a microscope to do it. Depending on how much installed memory you need, you could simply leave the one slot empty, and buy a larger RAM card to stick into the other slot (under the keyboard). This laptop can accept a maximum of 512Mbyte card in each slot, for a total of 1024Mbytes.

Memory slot #2 in the Toshiba Satellite M105 - S3074

The second memory chip is directly under the keyboard. you need to gently pry off the plastic cover above the keyboad that has the speaker grid on it. under there you will find the screws to remove the keyboard and then under the keyboard you will find the additional chip. I maxed mine out with 4gb. but since I'm only running 32 bit it only uses 3gb. If your gonna upgrade be sure to do it in pairs.

I can't find the second ram slot

Lots of laptops have the second slot under the keyboard. If you are adventurous take the keyboard off and look in there.

Installing Memory

Hi

Yes, you can replace/upgrate the memory module under the keyboard.

Before you proceed, note that Dell Inspiron 2650 uses DDR200 3.3V SODIMM modules. Also, memory module capacities supported are 128MB and 256MB with a Maximum memory of 512MB. If the current memory installed is 128MB, you need to order 2x 256MB modules to replace/upgrade both memory slots. If the installed capacity is 256MB, you just need another 256MB for the slot underneath the laptop.

Check "Removing the Keyboard" for guide removing the keyboard to access the 2nd memory slot.

Read "Preparing to Work Inside the Computer" before committing to the above procedure.

Let me know how you get on.

Mike
