Question about Sony VAIO VGN-FS740/W Notebook

1 Answer

No picture My vaio VGN FS740/w has no picture even when i turn it on. I have attempted hooking it up to an external monitor to test to see if it was the screen but there is still no picture. When i turn it on i dont hear the usual sounds of it starting up like i did before i had this problem. I was thinking it was the motherboard but i have been unable to actually find a replacement for the motherboard. If you can help it would be much appreciated. thanks.

There are a couple more steps you can try to see if you can bring it back to life again. First, make sure the laptop is completely off, and remove the power and battery, then press and hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds, then plug just the ac power and try again. If it works, then great, all it needed was a bit of a power reset. If it doesn't work, then the next option is, again, remove power and battery, then remove all the RAM modules, and plug the power back in, and try turning it on. Hopefully what we should get is a POST error beep coming from the speakers. If it does give you that beep, then what it would most likely be is a faulty stick of RAM, in which case, you'll have to reinsert the RAM modules one by one (with the power off of course) and turn the unit back on to see if you can get video back. Basically isolate to see which stick is causing the problem, so you can get that one (or possibly, both) replaced. If you don't get the POST error beep even with the RAM modules removed, then it is most certainly a failed motherboard. If you're having troubles getting one for it though, you can either try contacting Sony technical support directly, or bring the unit to a local authorized repair center, and see if a technician can try their luck at locating a replacement board for you. Just be forewarned that laptop boards aren't exactly cheap (approx $200-400 USD), and if you have the technicians install them, labour charges will also accrue. Depending on the age of your machine though you could also check with either Sony, or your place of purchase to see if your repairs can be covered under warranty if you have one. Hope this gives you a little more information and points you in the right direction!

I have Sony Vaio VGN-FZ15G motherboard working but have no display

First step is to hook it to an external monitor. If the monitor has signal, then you should be able to re-seat the video cable on the system board. If not, then something internal, like the motherboard, is defective.

I have a light pink Sony Vaio VGN-CR510E and i've had it for a little over two years now. The screen has gone grey/white and will only return to the natural screen when the tops of the screen are squeezed,...

I wouldnt say beyond repair, if you were able to compress it and the screen would appear normal there is a connection problem, your monitor has small connections making it work one happens to be an inverter. It could be that the connection is loose, the bad thing about that is if its loose there is a chance it could cause a short which in return you will need an inverter or whole monitor.

1. try hooking it up to an external monitor, you need a vga or dvi cable and try hooking up to a projector or another monitor, if that doesnt work its your video card. unfortunately either fix is somewhat expensive. Good luck and please vote thank you.

if you have have hooked up an external monitor before here are some instructions

1. make sure the power is off

2. plug the vga cord to your laptop and to the external monitor, 15 pins normally blue or back has 15 little holes ive seen some that are pink.

3. turn both on

4. you may have to hit a function key thats the fn button plus (on mine is f4 small rectangle with a line on each side of it .

5. if the external monitor works then your monitor or the cables to your monitor are bad

6. if the external monitor doesnt work its your video card and you will need a new motherboard if the card is integrated.

Are there diagrams/videos of cleaning the processor fan in a sony vaio VGN FS740/W?

Not really, remove the screws on the panel over the fan, use a stiff brush to loosen the dust on the fan and heat-sink and then use a vacuum to remove the dust.
