Question about Dishwashers

1 Answer

I have a GE GSD3200 dishwasher about 6 years old, which had been working well until this past week. When turned to 'start' the motor runs but no water fills the tub. I then poured 4-5 pots of hot water into the tub and tried to re-start. As soon as it was turned to 'start', I could hear all of the water draining out. How bad does this sound :) ?

Thanks for the fast reply. I did play with the float valve and found that it was freely moving. Again, the pump motor will run, so this particular switch doesn't seem to be the problem, does it?

Look inside the dishwasher and there is a little round cup shaped thing in the bottom of the washer. It shuts the unit off if the water gets to high. Lightly push down on it to reset. It should fill with water now. You should look into why it was tripped though. It might be something as simple as a fork getting hung on it. Hope that helps.

Most likely a problem with the temperature sensing that lets the dishwasher heater run without turning off. Not sure why the thermal fuse does not cut in to protect the heater.

The information on this site should help narrow the problem.http://www.repairclinic.com/RepairHelp/How-To-Fix-A-Dishwasher/28-6-878055-/Kenmore-Dishwasher-lights-flashing-or-blinking-66513193K902

I was told by a repairman that the seals around the motor swelled because I had gone on vacation for two weeks and not used the dishwasher. He charged $85 to turn the motor manually and restart the...

No. The unit most likely had some debris stuck in the macerator. The seals are water lubricated and its possible that some detergent dried between the seals. Detergent is a lot like glue when it dries. You are probably using the factory recommended amount of detergent which is, at least, twice the amount you really need. Next time you leave for an extended period, run the machine in the Rinse cycle. This will dilute or remove the detergent left in the machine

Water does not turn on. It is ok in sink area...it runs out.

You have 1 of 2 problems on this 35 year old DW...
1. The water solenoid is out.....need replacing.
2. The timer is going bad (has gone bad)...needs replacing....what happens over the years...with timers is that the teeth wear out , break,, wear down, and will not engage specific functions of the dishwasher as in activating the water solenoid. The odds are these parts will be cheap...but having been in the industry for 35 years...I have found that often when you install a new part in an old unit ....it places a load on all the old parts...that they are not used to...and other parts start to fail...you will probably be better off buying a new one....hopefully (and probably) the last you will ever need since you only use it once a week.

I hope this helped thanks ...the Fang.

Doesn't run

I asked for help when the dishwasher (GE 1991) started up and then quit. Your site was useful as we found a priority list of things to check, thus saving much time and confusion. Our problem turned out to be a disconnected ground wire.

Thanks for the help. You probably saved us a couple of hundred dollars for a repairman. We intend to replace the dishwasher next year when the kitchen is renovated so the timing was important.

Ge dishwasher hums but will not work. is a 1999 model,,seldom use

When you use your dishwasher so infrequently the water inside evaporates and allows the pump seal to dry out, so there is no longer the lubricating water there. You may be able to solve this by pouring a couple cups of hot (not bioling) water directly into the center of the lower wash arm (center spray tower) and letting it sit for several minutes.
If that does not work, you can take the bottom panel off and turn the fan blade on the motor by hand until if turns freely. (don't do this with power to the motor or you may have some nasty banged up fingers !)

To prevent this from happening in the future, keep some water in the dishwasher by poring a bit in every now and then, or by running a fill and pump cycle at least once a week or so. If you are away for extended periods, you can try adding RV antifreeze to the dishwasher while away.

Dishwasher not filling with water

My GE Nautilus, Serial # GSD363F00W, Model # LA774908 is about 3 or 4 years old. I use it at least once a day. It has been working fine. Today I turned it on, red light came on, and I heard activity of some sort inside machine but no water came. Turned washer off, looked inside, no water. Turned machine back on, again heard some sort of activity but again no water came. Tried twisting the dial through the washing cycles, detergent cup dispensed detergent and dry heat come on, but no water.

check to see if water is in basin. If so remove with dry rag until dry. Then run. If water is in basin, float will trip to stop inflow (flood precaution)
