Thanks for your response. I don't think it has anything to do with the setting of the display button. The four modes appear on the screen after pressing this button even though the screen is completely black. The histogram is blank, with a single line on the left (dark) side, which I suspect means nothing is getting through from the lens.

This means your second solution is the more likely - film wire from the lens at fault. You don't say how to expose the lens assembly or what to do after it has been exposed. Also I am no expert in these matters - so how would I go about exposing the lens - or is this a job for a professional?

Yes - very helpful, especially the link to another user who had the same problem in September 2008. This linked to a Sony website showing how to diagnose the problem and get it fixed free by Sony (US only). I wonder if I can get Sony UK to fix it free as well?

Hi Cormie,

thank you for using fixya.

the issue that you are experiencing is actual a power saver for theunit. on the controls of the camera you will be able to see the button"Display", if you press that you will have diff modes on the LCD onwhich will be displayed (lens view / lens view with shot control modes/ control modes / no display). just press the "Display button" a fewtimes with about 5 seconds interval and you should see the camera lensview. make sure it is on shot mode, not on playback mode.

if that is not case then culprit will be the film wire from the lens may be at fault and not the film wire from the memory.

thiscan be resolved if you can expose the lens assembly look for the filmwire end tagged "B" an attached wire from the lens to the LCD.

in the picture the smallest lens on the bottom.

the camera has 2 screws on each side that will dettach the case from the camera. the front and back panel of the camera has 4 plastic locks on the corner so this is the part that need a thin tool to wedge open.

Before trying to do any of the steps above, i strongly suggest that you check the warranty as it will void the period.

the camera also has a reset button, before doing any of the steps above, will you turn the camera off, press the RESET button with a fine-tipped object, then turn the camera back on, once it is on, let go of the RESET button.

if this did not work i strongly suggest that you get a new camera if this is more than 2 years old as having it professionally repaired will cost at least 3/4 of its market price.

Turn the power on and off again

I fixed this issue with my Sony Cybershot by gently (carefully) hitting the camera 3 times against a carpeted bench with the lens retracted and the camera turned off. It seems the lens gears were stuck. Now the camera works fine again.
