yes,there is obviously an option to do so.u need only to copy a tone in phone memory then select it and click options then u'll have lot of options to set it as-ringtone,msg tone,alert tone ,alarm tone etc.
U can change the message tone to what u want from the main screen click menu then settings -phone profiles-click arrows next to profile u want to change in the top right corner click the arrow choose new messages click message alert tone at the. Bottom click sounds and find the tone u want can even use music

thanks for your post by the sounds of that mate you need to get in contact with the person you bought it off as it has a sim lock so when the person that owned it had the phone locked to that sim card its just an antitheft unit technology these days so you need the original owner to give you the simcard lock they had put on there sim card for antitheft purposes but you might be able to flash the phone (reset) to factory settings to wipe it if you cant get into contact with that person hope this helps

if you live in the uk then just buys a sim card and try using it.but if for example you cant make or recieve a call when you use a vodafone simcard and the fone is unlocked to vodafone then give these guys a call.u can get the number from this website.
