Locked cursor on Toshiba Satellite using Windows Vista

The cursor on my daughter's laptop is frozen.  Basically the cursor will not move, no keys work, and the only way thing i seem to be able to do is turn the laptop on and off using the on/off button.  The screen is stuck on the logon page (i.e. the page that lets you choose wich user).

Have already tried Fn+F9, and every combination of Fn+[function key].

Beleive it or not we have no mouse to plug in so cannot try that.

You need to press f8 on boot when it is loading, to enter safe mode (before the Windows flash screen)

then when in "Safe mode" you can  should be able to gain access,

reboot from this mode and see if it loads normally,  if not then you have a configuration issue.

go back into safe mode, (login) and go to start>Run,  run a program called MSconfig,  this will allow you to look at your startup items,  and allow you to disable/enable them individually,

from this point you can diagnose which programs are causing your issues.

I hope this helps

I have a Toshiba LapTop Windows 7 My granddaughter pushed keys and now i can't get the cursor to move. I have tried shutting down and it is still frozen in the middle .

Are you using the trackpad to manipulate the cursor, or are you using an external mouse?

If you're using the trackpad, it may be as simple as using the Fn keys and the corresponding F keys at the top of the keyboard to enable the trackpad feature again. If that doesn't work, try plugging in an external mouse via USB port to see if that works.
If you're using an external mouse, then try to see if the cursor moves while using the trackpad.

Hopefully one of these options will give you control back over your cursor again.

My keyboard and touchpad cursor are both frozen.

Touch Pad can be disabled on two different ways. The first one is using FN+F9 key combination or using DISABLE option in mouse properties in control panel

The mouse touch pad doesn't work

Fn+F9 is the hot key for enabling or disabling the touchpad

Cannot use wireless mouse or laptop pad for cursor functions.

Rosemary,

This is a very common problem with many Toshiba laptops.

The cause is the bios on the motherboard.

The best way to get the computer working again is to contact a local authorized Toshiba center.

They are still repairing the problem for FREE.

So make sure you don't pay!

Here's a link to Toshiba's repair center finder.

Make sure you call them FIRST before taking your computer to them.

Best of luck!

HOW TO FACTORY RESET TOSHIBA SATELLITE NOTEBOOK

That model Toshiba does not come with a recovery CD, does not have a restore partition, and does not allow you to creat a recovery disc when working normally, so unfortunatly you have 2 choices.

1. Call Toshiba and try to get them to mail you a recovery disk, if they have any they will likely charge you for the disk + shipping.

2. Reinstall windows manually using a clean install, you can use any OEM windows disk as long as it is the same version as your windows product key on the bottom of the laptop (i.e XP Home/XP PRO/ XP MCE/ or VISTA - all vista disks are basically the same and have all 3 versions on them)

Make sure you have backups of the drivers for your network adapter and other hardware before doing a clean install.

There should be a soft key just above the cursor pad. You will need to turn that on. This will unlock the cursor. Good luck
