Question about LaCie External USB 2.0 500GB 7200 RPM 500 GB Hard Drive

Formatting WD SATA 500GB AAKS in larger than 137GB

I purchased an internal WD SATAII 500GB HDD to expand my storage space. I bought an adapter attachment that fits on the back of the SATA drive so I can hook it up with PATA cable and power. No matter what I try, the OS only recognizes 137GB and wants me to make partitions or volumes of that size, whether as a Basic or Dynamic drive.
I have two other internal WD HDD's of 200GB which I had no problem formatting them as 200GB drives and also three external USB2 HDD's larger than 137GB that are recognized with no problem and formatted at their full sizes (300 and 320GB).
I would like to format this new WD SATA 500GB at full capacity and not four partitions or volumes of 116GB.
I have tried using Data Lifeguard Tools but it does the same thing.
I am running WinXP SP2. It is WD5000AAKS internal hard drive.
Do you have any suggestions?

Hi guys, i have a new WDbluecavier 500Gb,16Mb cache but the allocate space is how can locate the remaining space??

This is the real capacity of your 500 GB hard disk - they are measuring it incorrectly for commercial reasons (in reality it's just 488GB) and there is a part that is reserved internally. There is nothing else.

I bought a "My DVR Expander" to use with my DirecTV HD DVR. Does Western Digital make this expander in anything larger than 1TB? If so, where can I buy one?

Note that your DVR will treat this as "extra" storage, i.e., supplemental to its "internal" storage.

A 1 terabyte hard drive allows you to record:
  • Up to an additional 600 hours of Digital TV
  • Up to an additional 120 hours of High Definition TV
Since the largest EIDE/PATA disk-drive is 0.5 TB, the disk-drive inside the Expander must be a SATA disk-drive.

So, disassemble the unit, disconnect the SATA disk-drive, and pay about $300 to buy a "2000Gb Western Digital Caviar RE4 Raid Edition 7200RPM 64 Mb Cache 3.5 7200RPM 64 MB Cache SATA Internal HD 3 Yr Warranty WD2003FYYS".

Connect the disk-drive to its interface.
Close-up the case.
Connect your "custom" PVR expander to your DVR,
and see if your DVR will recognize the 2TB of disk-storage.

My win2k adv server with sp4 finds 137gb space on a 250gb sata int hdd. how can i utilize full space where i m using 945 m/b

It's complicated to explain, but basically, you never get the full amount of space on your hard drive. For instance, a 320gb drive will always provide you with aprox. 298gb of space. However, your 137 vs 250 is a bit extreme. Is this a new hard drive? Have you made sure you have properly formatted and partitioned the drive? If this is a used drive, the previous owner may have it partitioned to use only part if the drive, so in this case I would try and format it.

Trying to format a 500GB HDD at full capacity

check your bios if the disk is recognized as 500gb first. if it is not recognized, update your motherboard bios. most updates are available in their manufacturers site.
