Image Numbering reset itself - how to fix?

Our A85 somehow got the image counter reset so that all pictures started renumbering at IMG_2001 and forward. Prior to that, my numbers had been in the 5000 range. The memory card has not been removed, so not sure what caused the reset. Is there any way on the camera or in ZoomBrowser to fix the numbering so that it will continue the prior sequence and avoid duplicating old file numbers??

THanks for your input, but I'm not sure what the "memory battery of the camera" is referring to. We have routinely replaced the 4 AA batteries in the past without having a problem with the numbering resetting itself. I'm unaware of any other batteries in the camera, so not quite sure what you have in mind.

Sorry, but I could not understand your sentence fragment. Thus it was "not helpful" to me. I rated your solution honestly, and I'm not going to be bribed into giving a rating that is not my opinion. Have a nice day.

Had the same problem on A510. I think is the same issue.
I seems that, by mistake I did that myself: on "Set up" menu, I choosed "File No. Reset" "On". After that, first time I erased all the pictures the number started from 0. Unfortunately I have no solution to set the old number back.

Replace the memory battery of the camera

most camera uses only one 3 volts button like memory battery, this battery last for two or more years after date of manufacture. some are very easy to locate and replace, but there are attached internally and you need pro fix to replace it. Check the date and time settings, if date and time are not correct, Mem battery is dead. If you set the correct time and date and after a day or two the settings has changed again, the Mem battery is weak and has to be replaced. Mem battery is responsible for the time, date and file numbering system of the camera, it is there so that every time you replace the 4A batteries,  you do not have to set them again and again.

How to reset picture counter numbering on Sony dsc H50... Thank You...

If it works anything like a DSC-W230 then copy all files from your camera usb stick to backup medium. then delete all files but one from the memory stick, using a usb card reader capable computer rename the one remaining file from [example] DSC00001.JPG to DSC01241.JPG, any subsequent pictures should increment properly. if you want to just reset to factory state and start from 001 again just hard reset the camera as per the owners manual instructions. Don't bother with Sony tech support on this issue, the either don't know how to do this, or are not allowed to tell you this, they told me I could not reset the numbering after my daughter did a hard reset, but I figured out it was possible to get it back to where I was at

The screen no longer shows pictures. The screen is still working as an image flashes onto it while it's starting up. I can still take pictures.

But when you take a picture, is the image also black? If so, this sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check this link for more info.
