Code 28 driver for xp

Microsoft Help and Support says that "Code 28 (The drivers for this device are not installed)" appears when the Windows Sound System Compatible Driver for the Windows 2000 operating system is deleted upon the upgrade to Windows XP. It's possible to repair this code.

Click on "Start." On the "Start" menu, click on "Control Panel." In the "Control Panel" folder, click on "Performance and Maintenance." Click on the "System" folder in the "Performance and Maintenance" folder. Click on the tab titled "Hardware." Click on the box that says "Device Manager." Click on "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers." Right-click on the device that prompts Windows XP to display Code 28 (it should be Windows Sound System Compatible Driver, also called the WDM driver). A drop-down menu will appear. Click on "Update" and an Update Wizard will guide you through the installation of a new device driver, which should stop Code 28 from appearing on Windows XP.

Did not install drivers for this device (Code 28)

Windows error code 28 indicates a missing or damaged driver file, which can keep devices connected to your computer from working correctly. This code appears in Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows Server editions. In most cases, you can stop this code from appearing by installing a new driver or by removing the old driver and replacing it with a different one.

Drivers
A driver is any piece of software that controls such devices as your graphics card, keyboard or printer. Windows operating systems come with many device drivers, and installs them automatically. Specialty devices, such as scanners, cameras or add-on cards, usually have their own proprietary drivers, which must be installed from a disk or downloaded file. b> Troubleshooting b> When any modern version of Windows can't find the driver to operate a device, it displays error code 28. You can find out more about the problem by opening Windows Control Panel, then choosing "System." Select the "Hardware" tab, then choose "Device Manager." From the Device Manager, select the problem device. In most cases, the device will have a small yellow exclamation mark next to its listing in the Device Manager. Right-click the device and choose "Properties" to see more information about the problem. Driver Installation b> You can install a missing driver on your own from the Properties dialog. Click the "Reinstall Driver" button and choose to install the software automatically. If automatic installation doesn't work, and you have a downloaded driver or one on disk, choose to install the driver from a specific location, then direct Windows to the correct file. If you don't currently have a driver for the device, visit the support section of the manufacturer's website. Most companies offer downloadable, updated drivers for all their devices. b> Considerations b> Sometimes Windows doesn't correctly recognize a device, even after you've installed a driver. This could happen because you used the wrong version of the driver or a driver meant for a different model of the device. Your existing driver may also be damaged and require reinstallation. In some cases, a fault in Windows may cause it not to recognize devices correctly. Microsoft offers an online diagnostic tool called Microsoft Fixit that can scan your operating system and tell you why code 28 is appearing.

It sounds like you have an error somewhere.
Run CHKDSK/F first to try and remove any hard drive errors, then download new drivers from the acer.com web site.

Not enough info supplied about operating system and video card to give you a direct link to the exact driver.

But here is the official link that you input your information to get the driver you are looking for.

I installed xp on my hp a6683w and it does not have the driver for the network card. i cannot get it from hp because it was a vista machine. where can i get the driver

Most HP and Compaq computers come with full versions of Microsoft Windows preinstalled. Microsoft has an extensive library of software, drivers, and updates available for free download. HP and many of its partners work with Microsoft to provide drivers through Windows Update. Use the following steps to download drivers, software, and updates by using Windows Update:

  1. Connect to the Internet and see http://www.update.microsoft.com (in English).
  2. Follow the directions in the Windows Update page to set up Windows Update and install the software updates.
  3. Be aware of the following tips when using Windows Updates:
    • Install all critical updates first to help keep your Internet connection secure.
    • If you are looking for drivers, they can be found as optional updates from the list of available updates.
    • Due to file sizes, number of updates, and download time, use Windows Update when the computer is not being used for other activities.
For more detailed information about using Windows Update to install drivers and get updates for Windows software, see the HP Support document Updating Drivers and Software with Windows Update .
NOTE: Another great way to quickly get updated drivers from Microsoft is to open Device Manager, right-click the name of the device, and select Update Driver Software . Updating a driver from Device Manager c01162470.gif
