Speakerss not working properly

I have my Speakers hooked up its a surround sound set with a sub woofer and they do not work the fuse is good power is on they play a little bit but you can hardly hear anyhing coming from them unless you have your ear right up to them and still then it is like a faint whisper

Is your system volume turned up (meaning the computer's volume settings, not the speaker's setting)?
