Have poulan 271490 riding mower. Replace battery and used it earlier this week no problem and now it won't start. Want to check the wiring but not sure how to get at the wires and anything else I might want to try.

make sure the PTO is turned off, very common to shut it off with the PTO still on. Also make sure the seat has weight on it to activate the starter switch. The brake may need to be fully depressed as well.
can you rotate the engine by hand?try and bypass wiring and jump at the starter if ok they bypassing the safety switches and bypassing each battery cable
Some mowers have a mowing reverse safety switch. That safety will kill the mower if you try to reverse with the deck engaged. Some mowers even have an override button that has to be held while backing up. As for the battery thing, no matter how much you charge a bad battery you will not get it to start a mower if it has a bad cell or two. I would use a multimeter to check battery voltage, but the end result would still be the same, replace the battery.
Battery is likely dead - or has built a sediment bridge - shorting the anode and cathode. Jump-start the tractor with your vehicle - or another battery to check.
Or - use a multimeter to ensure your battery is not draining to 0V when you attempt to start. This also indicates a failed battery. It may have a decent float charge - but when the load starter) is applied - the voltage will drop right out.
Are you sure you have conected the battary up the correct polarity, red cable to the positive terminal, black to the negative, there will be a main fuse somewhere behind the dash board, or on a low tention wire conected to the battary.
most likey you have a short . how do you ingage your blades by button or lever. if the button type look for a shorted wire . look for a bad wire some times mice get in to it and chew wires .
Your battery is dead. Replace it. In the winter keep a smart trickle charger on the battery to prevent it from discharging. Lead/acid batteries lose 1% of their charge per day and are basically junk in 3 months. They have to be kept charged.
