Re: icebox kitchen dvd modem

Because we would need to ask you a whole lot of questions about how you are connecting to the Internet, I think it would be simpler if you were to go to this link I list below.  Use a friends or the library computer to print out the details. There's a lot of information and it seems to cover every detail you need to answer your question.

If you still have problems respond back and we will try to walk you through it.  But I think you will get your answer.

I have a Westel wirespeed. Can I hook up a

The Valet Plus manual shows rear connections for 4 wired computers (like most routers), so you would plug your work computer into one of those. The yellow Internet port on the back of the Valet would connect to the modem's Ethernet jack (also yellow, I believe; that's the standard color coding). If you need full setup information you can download the manual and get other answers at Cisco's site.

Do you have a router? If the modem was hard wired to the other computer, you need to unplug your modem, wait a bit, then plug it back in to reset the computer's ip address.

New modem will not work with my Belkin F5D7230-4 router

I would start by re-setting the modem. Disconnect the power for the router and modem. Wait a minute or two. Plug the modem back in first. Wait for the modem to complete communication with your internet service provider. When all communication lights are good on the modem then plug the power into the router. It amy take a few minutes to get all the lights. Hopefully this will allow the DHCP to release from the old router and renew to the new one. Make sure if your internet provider requires any manual configurations that they are properly configured in the new router.

I can't get on the internet

>> do i have to call my internet service provider to activate my modem?

Each modem has a unique "address", and your I.S.P. uses that address to authorize each DSL-modem that tries to connect to their network.

Or, if the two of you live in the same house/apartment, you should just buy a "router". Then, both computers can connect to the router, and the router connects to the DSL modem, and both of you can "share" the monthly fee for the _one_ Internet connection.

Two computers will not access internet at the same time.

It is not possible to have 2 computers using one phone line at the same time.... However, you can use what's called internet sharing. You will need a network card for both computers, a cross over cable to plug each computer together and then one of the computers will connect to the dial up source.

Be prepared for really bad performance on both computers. You are more than cutting your speed in half by doing this.

If you have the option for DSL or cable I highly suggest you take that approach and save alot of frustration.

Please rate my solution and thanks for using FixYa,

Good Luck

Opening ports on 4100

Thanks for the information. I'd recommend obtaining a router, it would make your life easier because routers are made to do exactly what you're needing to do (split your internet connection among several devices (PS3, PC, etc.). I'm a fan of Linksys routers, I use them in every home deployment possible. You can find the Linksys WRT54G or some variant at any big box store (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.) or at online retailers (,, for real cheap. All you'll need to do is hook up your router to your ISP'd modem, hookup your PC & PS3 to your router, enabled uPNP (universal Plug & Play) on the router and you're set.

You could use your PC as a router (assuming your PC has two network cards in it). You just turn on Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) and specify which card is connected to the ISP's modem (internet) and which one is connected to the PS3 (internal network). I don't recommend this solution as it is a bit buggy and having to route all the data from PS3 through your PC degrades the online performance on both the PC & PS3.

I hope this info helps, let me know if there's anything else I can do to help.
