Question about NetGear Computers & Internet

3 Answers

I have a Netgear FR314 router. The test light will not go out.

I had forgotten my password, and attempted to use the reset procedure to set it back to the default. Unfortunately I apparently did one part of the process incorrectly. Before I pressed the reset button, I disconnected all cables from the router, including the ethernet connection to the administrative PC, and the cable modem. Now I have no access to the admin website to reload the firmware, and it appears that the test light will not go out until that can be accomplished.

Is there some workaround that will allow me access to the admin website?

Thanks

Instructions to Reset a Cisco Router Back to Factory Defaults There are two main methods to return a Cisco router to its original factory defaults. These two methods are described below.
Method 1 This method uses the config-register 0x2102 command in global configuration mode.

  1. Check the configuration register on the router by issuing the show version command. The configuration register setting is displayed in the last line of the show version command output, and should be set to 0x2102. If this is not the case, enter the config-register 0x2102 command once in global configuration mode.
    router# configure terminal
    router(config)# config-register 0x2102
    router(config)# end
    router#
If the show version command is issued again, the same line in the command output will have '(will be 0x2102 at next reload)' appended to the current register setting.
  2. Erase the current start-up configuration on the router with the write erase command.
  3. Reload the router with the reload command. When prompted to save the configuration, DO NOT save.
    router#reload
System configuration has been modified. Save? [yes/no]: n
    Proceed with reload? [confirm]
  4. Once the router reloads, the user will be presented with a 'System Configuration Dialog' as shown below. The router is now reset back to the original factory defaults.
    --- System Configuration Dialog ---
Would you like to enter the initial configuration dialog? [yes/no]:
Method 2 This method uses the config-register 0x2142 command in global configuration mode.
  1. Enter the config-register 0x2142 command in global configuration mode.
    router(config)# config-register 0x2142
This causes the router to ignore the start-up configuration on the next reload. If a show version is issued, the last line in the command output will have '(will be 0x2142 at next reload)' appended to the current configuration register setting.
  2. Reload the router using the reload command in enable mode. It is not necessary to save when prompted to save the system configuration.
    router#reload
System configuration has been modified. Save? [yes/no]: n
    Proceed with reload? [confirm]
  3. After the router has reloaded, the user will be presented with the 'System Configuration Dialog'. Enter no to the question 'Would you like to enter initial configuration dialog?'
  4. Change the configuration register setting to 0x2102 by entering the config-register 0x2102 command once in global configuration mode.
  5. Issue the write memory command in enable mode to overwrite the existing start-up configuration with the current running configuration.
  6. Reload the router with the reload command in enable mode.
Once the router reloads, the user will be presented again with a 'System configuration Dialog' as shown below. The router is now reset back to the original factory defaults.
    --- System Configuration Dialog ---
Would you like to enter the initial configuration dialog? [yes/no]:
Verify This section provides information you can use to verify that your router has been returned to the factory defaults.
Certain show commands are supported by the Output Interpreter Tool ( registered customers only) , which allows you to view an analysis of show command output.
  • show running-config - used to verify that the previous running configuration has been erased. The user should be left with a skeleton configuration. For example, there should be no IP addresses configured under any interface on the router.
  • show version - used to verify that the configuration register is set to the default value of 0x2102.

To setup port forwarding on this router your computer needs to have a static ip address.
Take a look at our Static IP Address guide to setup a static ip address.
When you are finished setting up a static ip address, please come back to this page and enter
the ip address you setup in the Static IP Address box below.

    Do not skip this step!

Open a web browser like internet explorer or Netscape. Enter the ip
address of your router in the address bar of your browser.
In the picture above the address bar hashttp://www.google.com in it.
Just replace all of that with the ip address of your router.
By default the ip address should be set to 192.168.0.1.

You should see a box prompting you for your username and password. Enter your username and password now.
By default the username is admin, and the password is password. Click the Ok button to log in to your router.

Click the Firewall link near the left side of the page.

    Click the Access link.

    Click the Add Service link.

Camstreams requires you to forward the 5700 ports.

    Add a known service:

    [Custom Service]

    Or, add a custom service:

    Name

    Port Range *

    -

    Protocol

    TCP
    UDP

Go ahead and enter the settings shown above into the services
    menu, and click Add.

Now head back to the services window by clicking on Firewall, then Access, then Services.

    LAN Out
    Public LAN Server

Now enter the settings above, and go ahead and click Update at the bottom of the page.

We will list a series of lines here that will show you exactly how
to forward the ports you need to forward. Camstreams requires
you to forward the 5700 ports. Go ahead and enter the settings shown
above into the Custom Services menu and then click Add.

Dont know my wpa2-psk

I would connect to the router with an ethernet cable, and in your browser, go to either htttp://127.0.0.1, or http://192.168.1.1. This will be the login for your router settings. If you have not changed this, which most people have not (it is different from your wpa2 password), look up the brand and model of your router here to find the default login information: http://www.phenoelit-us.org/dpl/dpl.html.
Once logged in, you should be able to change the wpa2 password from these menus, or reset the router all together.

I'm trying to sign into my Netgear Router to reset my password, because I do not remember it and to set-up a secure connection. However whenever I type in http://routerlogin.net, All I get is information...

How to View or Change Your Wireless Network Password Symptoms:
  • You have lost or forgotten the password to your wireless network
  • You have lost or forgotten the password for the router, access point or other network device
  • You left the default password or used a weak password and someone has hijacked your network

Depending on the router, you can either view or reset the wireless network password (also referred to as the passphrase or security key) if you can log into the router. Some routers mask the wireless network password, so while you cannot recover it, you can enter and save a new password.

If you cannot log into your router because you have forgotten the router password or your network has been hijacked, please refer to "Lost or forgotten password for router or other device" below.

To view or reset a wireless network password:

  1. Log in to your NETGEAR router by browsing to http://www.routerlogin.net or http://www.routerlogin.com. Enter the username (admin) and password. By default, the password is password or 1234 unless it has already been changed.
  2. From the left-hand navigation menu of the Router Manager, select Set Up > Wireless Settings.
  3. From the center screen, select your encryption type from under the Security Options heading.
    • If the wireless network passphrase is visible, review it and use it to log devices onto your network.
    • If it is not visible, you can change your wireless passphrase; however, changing the passphrase will cause you to lose your wireless connection. Connect your computer to the router with an Ethernet cable before entering a new passphrase into the text box and clicking Apply.
If you cannot log into your router:

Unfortunately, there is no way to recover a lost or forgotten password from a router or access point; you will need to reset the device to factory defaults. However, once the device is reset to factory defaults, you can use the default username ("admin") and password (either "password" or "1234" depending on your router) to reconfigure your router settings.

NOTE: Restoring factory defaults on a device will erase any customizations you have made. You will lose any configurations saved to the device!

For FR314, FR318, and FV318

These routers require reloading the firmware in order to recover from a lost password. Download the most recent firmware from NETGEAR's Web site before proceeding. Follow the instructions in the manual.

Reset and Restore the NETGEAR device to Factory Default Settings Problem: var js_3;function initPsDisplay(){js_3 = new PsDisplay({"info":{"controller_name":"PsDisplay","name":"PsDisplay_3","type":"FormField","w_id":3},"attrs":{"label":"","tabindex":"","field_name":"description","cf_id":"","table":"answers","highlight":0},"js":null});js_3.init();}YAHOO.util.Event.onDOMReady(initPsDisplay); Symptoms:
  • Forgotten/lost password to log into the NETGEAR device
  • Cannot access the NETGEAR device web interface

Workaround: var js_4;function initPsDisplay(){js_4 = new PsDisplay({"info":{"controller_name":"PsDisplay","name":"PsDisplay_4","type":"FormField","w_id":4},"attrs":{"label":"","tabindex":"","field_name":"solution","cf_id":"","table":"answers","highlight":0},"js":null});js_4.init();}YAHOO.util.Event.onDOMReady(initPsDisplay); Resolution:
If you have changed the default password and have forgotten the password, you may need to reset the NETGEAR device to factory default settings.

When a NETGEAR device resets, it goes back to the state when it was new — all information that was entered by hand is lost! Examples are critical things you need to get online, such as ISP username, ISP password, IP addresses, wireless security keys, and ports and services that were opened. It all needs to be re-entered.
So, have your ISP information before resetting the router.
Naturally, if you moved to a new city, or if you bought a used router, the old information in the router may not be of use to you. Contact your ISP if you can't connect any computer directly to the Internet.

Reset for most routers with a reset button on the rear panel
Write down configuration information such as IP addresses, security keys, opened ports and services, etc., that you modified. (The default username is admin and the password is either password or 1234. Try these before resetting the router.)
  1. Press the reset button on the back until the test light blinks. This takes about 10 seconds. (To avoid accidental resets, the small button is recessed. Use a pen or paperclip to access it.)
  2. Release the button.
  3. Wait for the router to reboot.
  4. Log in with the default password. If the router configuration was not cleared, try these additional steps AFTER the router has finished rebooting.
  5. Unplug the router's power.
  6. Press and hold the reset button. While the button is held down, reconnect router's power.
  7. Continue to hold the reset button for 20 seconds after reconnecting the power.
  8. Wait for the router to reboot.
  9. Log in with the default password.

Hope this helps.......

God Bless.......

Reset

You can reset your Netgear router/wireless wpn824 router to the factory settings from within the router manager. The reset procedure removes all user-configured settings and returns the router to the original factory settings.

For this reason, only reset the router if you encounter problems that can't be solved with other methods.

Step 1: Check that your Netgear router/wireless wpn824 router is properly connected with your system or not. If it is OK, then press reset button on Netgear router for at least 10 seconds. The 'test' light should flash during this process.

Step 2: Now open browser and enter Netgear's IP address into the address bar. Generally, '192.168.0.1' is the Netgear router IP address but you can find specific IP address in Netgear wpn824 router manual.

Step 3: Now enter your default username and password to log in to router.

Step 4: Click 'Erase' button under the 'Revert to Factory Default Settings'. This process will erase all your previous changes that have been made to the router and restore the configuration settings to factory setting. Don't interrupt the process until the process is finished.

Once the router's 'test' light has stopped blinking and the configuration page you are on has refreshed, the wpn824 router has been reset.
