Question about Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-S40 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Sony DSC-S500 My camera is 10 months old. It's been working perfectly up until today. When I turn it on the lens closes. When I turn it off the lens opens. When I can get the lens to open half way as soon as I push the zoom button it closes. It's kind of like the lens is stuck. I've tried replacing batteries, I wasn't sure what else to do.

You are right it has defective mechanism,  a stucked mechanism is present. camcorder are smart it can detects error and shuts down itself for safety. earlier models dominoes the defect if the user is not quick enough to react when something goes wrong with the camera. You need professional service to fix it.

I have a Fuji finepix j38 that is appox. 8 months old. When I turn the camera on, the lens comes out, immediately retracts, and "zoom error" comes up on the LCD. I can view pictures, but can't take any. ...

I thimk your problem is that you have sand betwin the lens mechanism and that cause the immediately retract.you can try to apply air pressure near the lens but with care

My daughter dropped her sister's Nikon Coolpix S560 in the sanddunes today with the lens open. It still took pictures after that but the lens wouldn't close. Now it opens and closes and makes a grating...

It seems that some sand particles are lodged between the lens casing and the camera's body. and when it finds that there is resistence in moving the lens, it shuts down. Use somethig that sucks, like the vacuum cleaner to **** the sand particles out. Do not blow, else the sand will go further in.

Nikon s50 lens error

Try jiggling the lens. Use compressed air to blow out any grit around the lens barrel. If that doesn't do it, you'll need to get the camera serviced.

When i turn on my camera it says Turn the power off and on again

Hey, my camera the dsc- w80 did the same thing. When I turned it on, the lens opened 3-4 times and then it said "turn the power off and on again".
When the lens opened an closed, I pulled on it with my fingers and twisted it. I kept doing that: Turned the camera on and off, kept pulling and twisting the lens and now my camera works again!

Can't make pictures-lens in not opening

I tried contacting Casio, and I was SOOOO impressed with their customer service! The camera was still under warranty - only five months old. I live outside of the US, and althought Casio would not return the camera to an address outside the US, I lucked out in having Casio return ship to someone I would see in the near future. I shipped it Fed-Ex (~ $60) at my charge; they replaced the complete lens assembly and shipped it to the US address AT NO CHARGE within 10 days!! The camera has worked perfectly ever since (4 months now).

All I can say is "Thank you, Casio! You have completely restored my faith in product warranty departments!"

Canon error code 99

Your camera performs a quick 'integrity' check before each shot and goes into error 99 mode if the lens in incompatible or has a diaphragm problem. ( it will also display e99 if the shutter or flash unit is not ok but this does not apply here ). This is how you can check whether the diaphragm mechanism is ok : attach lens to your old camera and set camera to AV and set F stop to 16 . open back and release shutter and look through the back to see if your lens is closing to F 16. If it is closing fine then the lens is ok but is not compatible with your D400.

Nikon Coolpix S5 lens cover won't open

Hi Debscan, My 1.4 year old S5 developed the same problem and after checking out various websites I get the impression that it is a common one to these cameras. I found that if I put the camera on a level table and then turn it on (and off) 3 times the lens cover would open further with each try. On the third turn-on the lens cover would drop fully with a definite "Click" and the camera would work. The next time I shut it off, the lens would not close properly, but the same "Third times the charm" routine would always work. This may only delay the inevidable final crash of the camera, but it might get you a few more pictures out of it.
