Craftsman riding mower - engine dies when releasing the clutch

Engine starts fine with clutch engaged. Engine dies when releasing clutch OR engaging the mower blades. Belts appear to be working. Cannot move mower forward or back when engine is stopped. Otherwise runs great. Seems like could just be a minor problem with a part that has broken.

I can check the carb but it was very recently cleaned. It also dies with the clutch engaged and engaging the blade so why would the carb be a problem in that case? The back axle does appear locked as I cannot move manually. The brake lever (the kind you lift up to lock in while holding in the clutch/brake) is not engaged but there is lever at the very back end of the rider that no matter whether I pull though and engage in the slot or leave out I cannot push the mower? Seems like something mechanical to me but I am not that knowledable on mowers.

Not sure I posted my follow up question correctly so here it is again. I can check the carb but was just recently cleaned out. Engine also still immediately upon starting to engage the blade with clutch still engaged. Its true I cannot roll the mower when stopped with either the "latch" at the back end of the mower either engaged in the slot or not. Thus it feels like a mechanical problem but I am not that good with mowers. ???

What do you mean by "drain my pocket" I assume you mean this is just something serious I should have a mower repair person look at rather than doing it myself? Thanks

I don't have the model but it is a basic Craftsman with a Kohler engine. The clutch/brake is bottom left foot. The forward/reverse is on the right rear wheel well. There is another large lever on right to lower the deck. You engage the blades by lifting up a lever on the "dash". Other than that there is the key start on the right side of the dash and a choke knob and throttle volume lever on left side of dash. That is the mower. We have used it several times to mow this year and have not used it to plow snow. A couple times it did not want to go forward when in forward gear but pulling it into neutral and putting it back in forward did the trick. It starts no problem but the issue of dying soon as you start letting off the clutch/brake or even holding in the clutch and then trying to engage the blades will also kill the engine. It is at a relatives house now so can't just run over to get the model number. Thanks for any help before I just call someone to come out.

Mel,
Nothing worse than to have your mower quit when you are ready to cut the grass.
Do you have a model number I can review, it would be very helpful and is this the first time this year you have attempted to mow?
Do you use the mower in the winter to plow snow.
Let me know.
Best Regards,

If the engine dies when clutch is released, either the carb is plugged or dirty not letting the motor hit high power, or you may also want to check rear axle to make sure it is not locked up. Make sure brakes are not stuck ON.

The first thing I would check is to make sure the drive belt is not binding somewhere.

Tractor Will Not Move And Dies When Brake Is Released

I would check the wires and clean the connectors and make sure seat switch is working. If that is not working, it's like getting off the seat without holding the brake/clutch pedal down or getting off seat with blades engaged. Both will cause engine to die.

I have 16 hp Craftsman riding mower with a Kohler engine.

It may think you are in reverse and is killing the motor to keep you from backing up with the blade running. Look for switch that is telling it when you are in reverse, maybe it is stuck with grass or other debris. another possibility is that the blades are jammed and they are stalliing the motor. Mines stalls easily when cold.
