Briggs & Stratton lawnmower wont start!

I unknowingly drained the old fuel out of my Briggs& Stratton self-propelled lawn mower caburetor side down. When I ran the engine, I got white smoke and then it shut down. All of my attempts to restart have failed. I read an earlier post and changed the oil per instructions. I replaced the spark plug and tried it again. I pulled the spark plug again and noticed that it was covered in oil. I cleaned it, dipped it in a little gasoline and tried it again. No luck. Please advise.

What do you mean by "carburetor side down".
Have you tried several start attempts with the spark plug out so that the cylinder can be purged of the oil or whatever that may be causing the problem?

I agree. you have oil where it shouldn't be. Remove spark plug and pull the rope a few times clean the plug and install it again.

Have a Briggs and Stratten 4.0hp Lawnmower that starts but sputters. What can I do to get it running smooth...What is the Spark Plug GAP?

How old is the fuel? Drain old fuel, use premium fuel and change spark plug and maybe air filter. I start mine in the Spring using quickstart. It also starts and dies a few times and eventually keep running. Winterizing the machine in the Fall prevents most starting problems in the Spring. If this does not solve the problem, see a mechanic.

Have a self-starting, self propelled toro lawn mower about 5 years old, I ran it out of gas by accident & now it won't start

It seems to be an obstruction in your fuel delivery system. Get a can of ether and a spray a short burst of it into the breather area near the carburetor, if the mower starts up and then stalls out, then you may need to get your carburetor serviced.

Where is the oil drain plug

The drain plug on a Briggs and Stratton engine is underneath the deck. Most likely it is concealed by cover for the self propel belt and possibly the blade as well.
The suggested method for draining the oil is to warm up the engine by running the unit for 10 minutes or more, though this should be sufficient time for the engine to have warmed up. Then drain the oil.
An alternate method is to drain the oil out of the oil filler tube. To do this, after the engine is warmed up, tilt the mower onto the side that has the oil filler tube. Put the drain pan under the filler tube, then remove the filler cap. The oil will drain out into the oil drain pan.
CAUTION: The oil that will come out of the engine will be HOT! So be careful when removing the oil filler cap.
I hope this will answer your question. Best of luck in this mowing season.

My lawnmower starts but does not stay on

If it starts and runs and then slowly dies, it is more than likely your carburator jet is stopped up.With it being blocked, it is starving for fuel. You will have to clean out the carburator and retest. Also check your engine compression.

Troy-Bilt Briggs & Stratton 550 restarting

Troy, Unless you are using old fuel (it breaks down after 1 week) it sounds like you have a faulty spark plug. Replace this first, drain any old fuel and replace with fresh fuel (premium unleaded). A faulty plug will work one minute but then fail like you have described.
