Sony cyber-shot camera not staying on

over the last month my camera has started taking 3 or 4 pictures and shutting off. I have tried new batteries and this time the lens came out and will not turn on to retrack the lens. the cybershot comes up on screen then immediately turns off. I looked in the manual but I can't do anything unless it stays on. It was purchased as a Christmas present in 2006
