Engine throttling up and down continually

I have a John Deere 318 Garden Tractor. When running, the engine throttles up and down continually....at any throttle setting. It dies when the throttle is returned on or near the slowest speed. It doesnt do it until it has warmed up some. I have replaced the fuel filter and tried some Sea Foam in it as advised by local dealer...no luck. Any ideas? Carburetor overhaul needed? Thanks....Curt Campbell

This is the classic symptom of improper air/fuel ratio.

There should be an adjusting screw on the side of the carburetor -- it has a spring at the base -- turn this with a screwdriver slowly back and forth to see which direction makes it run better -- take it from there...

ADJUST THE GOVENOR ON MY LT 155 John Deere lawn tractor

This should be Kawasaki engine; although, it could a Kohler. The IPL on this doesn't specify which engine it has. It would nice if it did where I could look the engine's service manual but the following should be what you need.

You place throttle in full throttle position. You need to watch the linkage at the governor shaft for which it turns as you go to full throttle then you would continue turning the governor shaft in that direction until it stops. From there you tighten the retaining bolt or nut and you should be good to go.

1970 John Deere 4020 Diesel, Engine speeds up by its self, I goose the throttle and then it will idle down. pretty sure it is a govenor problem. How do I fix this?

spring is broken/stretched out on govenor linkage bar that runs from air damper flag to injector pump and i would expect a 1970 to be needing a new spring about 5 years ago

I used my John Deere L110 Lawn Tractor all day yesterday. Turned the engine off, it popped. Then went to start it today and it just pops, seems like the timing is off.

throttle down your engine before turning it off . this reduces amount of fuel going into a hot engine ,just a few seconds before switching key off , should stop back firing issues.

My john deere rideing mower idles up and down at

The motor has a governor that controls its speed, and if one of the pivoting parts or linkages is sticking this would happen. Look for the throttle linkage on the engine carburetor (move your throttle up and down, watch what moves). The governor will be a second linkage attached to the throttle arm. Squirt some WD-40 on any rotating parts and make sure a foreign object isn't stuck in there. It could also be the part of the governor that's internal to the engine -- harder to get at, but not expensive to fix.

John Deere LA145 B&S 22Horsepower engine starting and running

You may simply need a new fuel cap, vacuum in the tank will rob your fuel and stall it engine, try taking off the fuel cap and see how it runs.If this does not help you may need a new fuel pump, which runs off of crank case pressure and should take over from the choke once the tractor has started.

Have had to replace fuel line in tank MANY times do to it being split just above pump.Try doing a fuel pressure test on the return hose from throttle body, should be close to at least 40psi.

I have a 1988 318 John Deere garden tractor and it revs really high when i turn the throttle up and revs comes back down after a few seconds. But overall,, full throttle engine is over-revving, can only...

If your rpm's are high/sluggish and slow reacting its do to your govenor inside your engine needing to be fixed. There is a plastic housing with fingers on it that will break and allowing metal balls to free float.Another problem with them is that the washer under the retaining ring will fail or loose tolerance, also located inside engine.
