Question about Back to Basics TEM-500 Egg & Muffin 2-Slice Toaster

3 Answers

I have enjoyed my egg and muffin toaster for some time but all of a sudden the heater for the egg portion is not working. Is there a part (fuse?) or something that I can purchase to get it working again?

What a coincidence! My neighbor brought over his back-to-basics a couple of days ago with the same symptom.

I took it apart but haven't completed testing yet -- but it's not going to be simple. I think it's the relay for the egg cooker. It's soldered in a circuit board -- most likely will need replacing.

Unless you have experience with appliance repair, you should probably take it to a shop.

Update on my neighbor's toaster / egg cooker. The relay for the egg cooker was bad. No internal parts available from the company, not worth adapting another relay.

But, my neighbor complained to the company and they sent him a new unit. Maybe that would work for you.

We have had a few of these toasters. The first one lasted for 2 years and we felt like we got our money's worth and bought a new one. The second one failed to cook the egg after 3 months, so I called the number on the manual to ask about the 1 year warranty. They were very kind and didn't need a reciept or any proof of purchase and sent us a completely new unit and it's been working fine. Try calling Back to Basics.

The toaster portion on my Back to Basics Egg & Muffin toaster does not work...please help

I just took mine apart. There is a small 24v relay that should switch and allow the toaster elements to come on.

If it is not staying down then there magnetic coil is not working. There is another question like this here.

The egg eliment doesn't work.

There is both a relay and a thermal fuse on the egg heater circuit. Could be either of them.

I have a tefal TT550015 toast 'n' Egg and have no instructions on how to use it. Please advise

To use the egg side only, fill the measuring cup with the correct amounts of water. (One side is for boiled eggs, one is for poached eggs.) Pour the water into the basin at the bottom. For boiled- Place 1-4 eggs in the tray with the four holes. Use the sharp thing at the bottom of the measuring cup to pierce the egg shell. Place the lid over top, and hit the 'egg' button. When the light on the button goes out, remove the lid. For poached, grease the pan. Spray/ butter, whatever. DO NOT rely on the non-stick. The thick black tray for boiling eggs goes on first. With the egg in the greased pan (scrambled or whole) place the pan into the unit. There are four plastic pieces in the boiling tray to show you where it goes, the handles aligned. The round tray, with the square holes in it, can be used to warm pre-cooked meat. This is optional, and that tray goes on top. Place the lid over the top, and press 'egg'.

WARNING: this cooks by steam, and any remainder can cause burns. Be careful when removing the lid. Same goes for the product. The boiled eggs should not be touched directly.

To make an egg sandwich, load the egg side and the bread/english muffin/bagel into the toaster. Press the 'egg/toast' button BEFORE starting the toaster. The toaster will start on a timer so that the egg and toast will be done at the same time. When the toast pops up, you are good to go.

Note: there should be no water afterwards, maybe a little oil if you cooked meat. Hard water residue is easily removed with vineger and a paper towel.
