Question about Chatterbox GMRS-X1 (15 Channels) 2-Way Radio

Chatterbox feedback when we engage PTT - GMRS x1

Two units are seperated and volume is low and despite this, we continue to get feed back (screeching) and thus not able to use the PTT feature. We have run our MP3's through the unit and we are able to hear our music. Battery is charged.

Grateful for suggestions we are about to take a long trip and would like to be able to communicate on the road. The units are used bike to bike.

Apparently not far enough apart. The mikes must be very sensitive. Do you have headphone or earphone connections on the units? If you are planning to use these on bikes, you will definately need to use head gear anyway and that will stop the feed back.

When I push the PTT button on my GMRSx1 the whole unit powers off. How do I fix that?

This can be a sign of a low or bad battery. Check your battery pack, battery contacts, and charger. Clean all contacts with a pencil eraser and recharge the battery. Another good test is to trade batteries with a known good radio and see if the problem is solved. If so, replace your battery pack. If the battery is not the issue, you have another problem with the radio.

Best regards.

Unit shuts off when using VOX or PTT

Transmit takes more power than receive, so you are correct in looking to the battery as the possible issue. Even being new a battery will sometimes be too low to take an initial charge. You might try putting the radio on the charger for 2-3 more charge cycles. Sometimes new batteries need this "jump start". Be certain the radio is turned off while on the charger. Inbetween charge cycles turn the radio on and let it set on standby until the battery is nearly run down. Also, clean your battery contacts with a pencil eraser for better connection. It is possible the contacts have some residue from the manufacturing processes which could block good connection.
You reference you had just gotten this radio. If new, you might consider returning it or calling the manufacturer if you are still having problems. If it is not a new radio, you should consider replacing the battery with a new one.
As for testing the battery, this can be done with a battery analyzer. Check with a local radio dealer to see if they would run a test on it with their analyzer. This would test the battery when put under a load vs. just testing the voltage, which is what your battery indicator is showing you on the radio.
Best regards.

Can the gmrsx1 talk to the hjc-frs

Yes, the Chatterbox is a GMRS / FRS Radio transmitter. If both radio transmitters are tuned to the same channel/subchannel, they should have no problems interacting.

When I press PTT, the unit beeps, shows "off" then powers down? Help..:-)

This is almost always a battery problem. Make sure that your batteries are fresh and fully charged -- they routinely start to lose their ability to accept and hold a charge after a year or so. Also check the battery terminals and the contacts inside the radio for corrosion, and clean them if necessary.

I hope this helps.
