There should be an adjustment for down pressure. If the down pressure is too great it will go back up. It sounds like you have too much down pressure.

So, once you find the down pressure adjustment screw, adjust it for less down pressure until it won't go down all the way.

Then, gradually increase the down pressure until you get a good seal between the door and the concrete floor.

If the opener is a chamberlain it should be on the left side -- if it is a genie product it will probably be on the back.

Some manufacturere don't make these adjustments very obvious, chamberlain does, but others don't.

On the side of your opener you will find 2 controls. One of them is the down limit. If the door travels down too far and hits the floor the safety will cause the door to reverse to the open position. You need to adjust this control in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. You will likely have to tweak this control to get it just right. If you run the opener too much while doing this it will cut off on the thermal overload. You will then need to wait about 15 minutes until it resets itself.

Door goes down and when it stops at botton, it turns and goes back up ??? Need adjusting ..How can I adjust???

Adjust the position of the door by using the black and purple buttons. Black moves the door UP (open) and purple moves the door DOWN (close)
Setting the up position: 1. Press and hold the black button until the LED starts flashing slowly, then release. 2. Push and hold the black button until the door reaches the desired UP (open) position 3. Push the door control or programmed remote control. This sets the Up (open) position and begins closing the door. 4. Immediately when the door begins to close press and release the black or purple button. This will stop the door Setting the Down position: 5. Push and hold the purple button until the door reaches the desired DOWN (Closed) position. 6. Once the door is closed, If there appears to be too much pressure on the door, you may toggle the door back and forth using the black and purple buttons to reach the desired closed position. 7. Push the door control or programmed remote control. This sets the Down (closed) limit and the door should open.

Liftmaster tries to close instead of open door

Remove the chain from the sprocket and then run the motor until the sprocket turns clockwise and stops. With the door in the closed position and everything attached to it, replace the chain and tighten. This will get everything back into sync. You will most likely have to tweak the up and down limits a bit. Do not over tighten the chain. It should sag just a little.

Cannot get chain drive to open or close position

What you need to do is adjust the down limit in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover until the door stops before reaching the floor and the same with the up limit. Now that you have the door stopping in each direction you can tweak those adjustments until you have it right.

THE DOOR IS NOT GOING ALL THE WAY UP AND WHEN IT CLOSES IT GOES DOWN AND LIFTS BACK UP HELP!!

Loosen the chain and remove it from the sprocket on top of the motor. Then run the opener until the sprocket turns counterclockwise and stops. Now with everything still hooked up and the door in the open position replace and tighten the chain. This should get you close to where you want to be and some minor adjustments of the up and down limit controls should do it.

Craftsman 1/2HP Door Opener won't stay closed

Loosen the chain and run the opener until the sprocket runs in the counter clockwise direction and stops. Now with the door in the open position replace the chain. This will get everything back into sync but I hope you remembered where all those controls were. You need to put them back in their original positions.

Sears opener wont open or close more than 12 inches

You may have put the chain back on out of "sync" with in internal up and down stops. You may have to take the chain off the motor sprocket and run the motor to make sure it is stopped in the down position ( watch the rotation of the sprocket to determine up or down position) When the motor is stopped in the down position put the chain back on with the chain Carriage in the down position. Then you can fine tune the up and down stop positions with the adjustment screws on the side.

I have a craftsman garage door opener and the chain came off the track. I've put the chain back on the track wheel but i had to loosen the chain to do so. now, when the door closes the bar bows up and the...

The reason your door is opening again is because there is a limit switch that is not making contact at the appropriate time to tell the drive to stop closing the door. The chain drive motor is controlled by a circuit that is expecting to see a signal telling it that the door is closed. If it doesn't see this signal to stop at the appropriate time, it continues to drive the door down unless it sees a certain amount of back pressure, which then tells it to return the door to the up/open position. This is a built in safety feature for most garage door drives and is industry standard now due to children getting caught under them and being killed. You can try this yourself. Stick a 4 foot 2x4 vertically under the middle bottom of the door as it's coming down, after a second or two the door will reverse direction.

With the chain falling off the drive and loosening it to replace it, you may have inadvertantly positioned the actuator of the switch, which is usually attached to the chain, out of position by a couple of links. There is a momentary contact switch mounted close to the door on the support shaft of the drive mechanism. This support shaft is the one holding the motor drive on one end, along with the chain and is anchored to the header over the garage door. This momentary switch may have a short metalic or plastic arm hanging down that is moved by the actuator on the chain and needs to be reset to a position where the switch contact will be closed when the door is in it's closed position. There are other options also depending on how new/old your door drive is. Some of the newer models use a through beam sensor or photo eye as a stop switch.

Please let me know if this helps.
