Question about Compaq Presario Notebook

Compaq Presario CQ70-116ea XP microphone extremely quiet

Hi,

I recently "downgraded/upgraded/sidegraded" my CQ70 laptop from Vista to XP Pro (it is far faster and more stable now). After a day's work I have all the correct drivers installed and all devices working... except that the internal microphone on the Conexant HD Audio 221 chipset is so quiet that I have to shout for anything to register in either the default Sound Recorder or via Skype. I have also tested this with a Plantronics USB headset and get the same results - the microphone is turn so far down that any sounds picked up can hardly be heard.

I believe this is somethign within the registry, at least I seem to recall reading that in a post over the past couple of days (with a soultion) but I now cannot locate that post and so cannot implement and test that solution.

Can anyone help with this? I'd be loathed to have to revert to Vista because of one simgle issue as the laptop is far more useable with XP Pro than it was with Vista.

Cheers,

Gary Hicks

    Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have the microphone input set to max (and even then it is only just audible if I have the mic 20dB gain switched on...).

I had a hell of a lot of trouble getting the damn Conexant HD Audio 221 sound "card" to work as it is, installed the drivers, then uninstalled them and got XP to find them for itself from windows update.

As I mentioned, I've read somewhere in the last few days that there is a fix that involves a registry "hack" as the default setting for the mic gain from the drivers is set rediculously low and cannot be changed via software.

    Any further suggestions?

    Cheers all the same :-D

    Gary

Have you tried going into the sound management and volume controls?, there should be a slider control to turn up the mic. in there somewhere.
Or updating the sound driver, or rolling back the driver?
I know that you have updated the drivers but I did that and had to roll back as the "new" driver was less than useless.
I hope this helps

Changing OS from windows vista to xp

You can install xp on a vista laptop, you will need an xp install cd and you will need to backup your data (it will be erased in the downgrade process). As for the drivers, go to your laptops manufactures site. They will have a support section for your laptop model where you can see if there are drivers for xp. If you have the hardware that will support windows 7, I would go with that. Xp is slow and no longer supported by Microsoft as of April 2014, which poses a security risk. Windows 7 will be supported for a while and is faster and more stable than xp or vista.

Tip

I can only comment on the Compaq CQ70-116ea laptop which I have just...

That happens because the BIOS uses a SATA controller that is not included in Windows XP install disk.

Usually you can solve the problem going to BIOS settings and changing SATA/RAID settings.Check your BIOS settings, and disable SATA RAID mode. This is done in different ways depending on the BIOS.

On HP/Compaq computers for example you press F2 on startup to enter BIOS, then disable SATA mode on bios settings.
On other makes the procedure can be slightly different.

Another way to fix the problem, is by creating your own XP setup disk with SATA drivers included, see:

Installed Xp pro on Compaq F750US and everything works except mic

When you go to hp.com, you need to ensure that you are downloading the driver for the appropriate operating system. You have to indicate whether you have the 32bit or 64bit version. It matters very much.

How want to downgrade win vista to xp pro hp compaq v3000

If you have a Windows XP Pro installation disk, put it in the optical drive, restart your computer, on startup, go to BIOS settings (usually press [Delete] and set the optical drive as first boot device. Save changes and exit. When the computer starts it usually says to press any key to start from CD. Press any key and the windows installation will start. Make sure you format C: and you will downgrade to Windows XP Pro. If you want to upgrade to Vista again, you will need to know the keyboard sequence to start Vista from Its partition or have Vista install disk.
