Diagonally opposite(the other corner) to where you connect your keyboard and mouse, there are pins to connect the front panel power switch. It can be identified by On/Off written on the motherboard.

Colored ribbons on motherboard and correct ports

Helps if you post the motherboard manufacturer name, and model number.

OR;

Post the computer manufacturer name, and model number.

This is found on the back of a Desktop PC, next to the Windows product key; or up on the side of the computer tower.

Color of the cables ('ribbons') doesn't matter.

WHAT they are does.

NOW.........I can guide you with plugging in power cables FROM the Power Supply, TO motherboard. Also the different peripherals the power cables plug into. (Harddrive, optical drive, fans, etc)

The front of your computer is the Front Panel.
The area of contact pins on the motherboard, that the Main wires from the Front panel go to; is the Front Panel header.
(Power On switch, Power On LED light, Harddrive LED light, Reset switch, etc)

I MAY be able to give you a Front panel header pinout.

We will see about Front USB ports, Front Audio ports, Card Reader, etc.

I CANNOT give you the color code of the wires, coming FROM the Front Panel, TO the Front Panel header.
I CAN give you info on how to find out what each one is, though.

Removing dvd drive from pc

Computer unplugged from power, computer Side Panel removed, follow Anti-Static Precautions.

Anti-Static Precautions:
Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit), the delicate hardware components inside a computer.

Relieve your body of Static, BEFORE reaching inside your unplugged from power computer.

Computer on a table, computer case open, computer unplugged from power;
TOUCH an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of the open computer case.
This action will relieve your body of Static.

IF, you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, be SURE to Touch the metal frame again upon your return.

Disconnect the power cable to the optical drive (CD/DVD drive), and the data cable.

The front plastic piece of the desktop computer is the Front Panel.
The Front Panel removes.
The Front Panel must be removed in order to replace the optical drive/s.

WHEN removing the Front Panel, GO S-L-O-W.

The Power On switch, Power On LED light, Harddrive activity LED light, USB front panel ports, etc; may be attached to the Front Panel.
You do NOT want to pull their wires loose from the motherboard.

In fact you may wish to make drawings, and notes as to where the wires connect; on the motherboard before removing the Front Panel.

Some Front Panels are just Covers, and the above does not need to be taken into consideration.

Look inside the computer case, and look towards the front, or Front Panel.
The Front Panel should have TABS coming from it, and go through slots in the metal framework, of the computer case.

The Tabs are plastic formed out of the plastic Front Panel.
They have a flat hook on the end. Each tab must be carefully pushed towards the Inside, or Outside, in order for the hooked end to clear the slot. Then when the Front Panel is removed, the tab will slide out of the slot.

Allow me to show you, using an HP desktop computer for an example, (Video)

Your tabs probably won't be so easily accessible, though.
Bear this in mind. They ARE THERE, I assure you.

How to re-wire a Compaq Presario SR2150NX Case power Switch

The plastic front of your desktop computer is the Front Panel.

The area of contact pins on the motherboard, that the wires from the Front Panel go to, is the Front Panel header.

F_PANEL_1

The Front Panel header contains connections for the Power On switch, Power On LED light, HarDDrive activity LED light, and so on.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00864922&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&lc=en&product=3339274

(Look at the motherboard photo. The Front Panel header is at the bottom right. Scroll down for the motherboard illustration )

There are 9 contact pins.
4 across the Top row, and 5 across the Bottom row.

The four pins across the Top row are numbered EVEN.

From the Left side going towards the Right side;
Pins 2, 4, 6, and 8. There is NO pin 10, just a blank spot.

The five pins across the Bottom row are numbered ODD.
Pins 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9.

A) Pins 2 and 4 are for the Power On switch

B) Pins 6 and 8 are for the Power On LED

(LED is dim when the computer is on? Switch the wires around )

C) Pins 1 and 3 are for the HarDDrive activity LED

(LED is dim when the harddrive is operating? Switch the wires around)

D) Pins 5 and 7 are for a Reset switch, IF a Reset switch is used.

How to know which wires are for the Power On switch, Power On LED, and HDD LED?

Follow the wires into the Front Panel. Remove the Front Panel, and follow them.
(Need guidance removing the Front Panel post in a Comment )

Replace power switch on HP Pavillion a1600n

1) Unplug computer from power.
2) Observe anti-static precautions.

Your body carries Static electricity. Static will fry out (Short Circuit) the hardware components inside of a computer.

Touch the metal frame of the open computer case, to relieve your body of static. (Should you get up, and leave in the middle of working on your computer, upon your return Touch the metal frame again )

Alternatively you can purchase an ESD wrist strap, (Electro Static Discharge), and use it. Average cost is around $6. The alligator clip is attached to the metal frame of the open computer case.

3) Identify each cable (Wire) that comes from the Front Panel, and goes to the motherboard.
Make notes, and a sketch of what pins on the motherboard those wires go to.

You may be just replacing the Power On switch, but if any of the other Front Panel cables are accidentally disconnected, from the Front Panel header on the motherboard, you won't have information as to where they go unless you make notes, and a sketch.

[The Front Panel is the plastic panel on the front of your computer, that has the Power On button, Power On light, HarDDrive activity light, etc. The Front Panel header, is the connector, or the pins on the motherboard, where the Front Panel wires go ]

This is HP Support, and the main page for the Pavilion a1600n Desktop PC,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=3245022&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=7&submit.x=10&lang=en&cc=us

To see the Front Panel header, there is a photo of the motherboard, and an illustration. On the above main page click on - Product information
Then click on- Product specifications, and finally on - Motherboard specifications A8M2N- LA (NodusM3)

Scroll down the page to the motherboard illustration.
In the very bottom right corner of the motherboard, you will see the Front Panel header, F_Panel 1

The Front Panel will have to be removed to access the Power On switch. This is the time that the cables from the Front Panel, can be easily accidentally disconnected from the Front Panel header on the motherboard.

How to open the computer case, and how to remove the Front Panel, can be found in the Upgrading and Servicing Guide.

On the main page click on Manuals.
Now click on - Upgrading and Servicing Guide - 2.86M. This is a PDF file download. Takes a few seconds to see the first page.

The Power On switch is located inside of the plastic Power On button. The plastic tabs of the button are gently eased to the outside, and the Power On switch is slipped out.

The plastic may have become brittle over time due to age, and heat from inside the computer.
I find using a hair dryer set to low heat, and moving back, and forth across the plastic, helps soften the plastic of the Power On button, enough to remove the PS_ON switch more easily.

This Power On switch should be a good replacement,

How to connect the front panel sould device?

Do you mean speaker or front panel audio? The front panel audio connector is located at the rear of the board, behind the PCI connectors - the speaker connections are in the panel connector block (2x10 pin header) located at the front left of the board.

With the board in it's normal position, the speaker pins are on the right hand side of that block, on the pin nearest the front and the one 3 positions behind that
