Question about Toro Lawn Mower With Toro Power Tools

1 Answer

Ok. This one has me stuck. I recently purchased a toro mower that had sat for a year. After the usual repairs on an engine that has sat for this long I fired it up. It still wont start. New fuel, good spark, fuel is making it to the carb. Even if I put gas in the engine it fires right up. This is my new problem. The gasoline flows right into the carb and out the over flow line when ever the thing is up right. Any thoughts on how to reslove this situation.

How to fix stuck pull cord of a 22 inch Toro Recycler lawn mower

Is the engine seized?. Try turning the blade and if it won't turn then you have a seized engine. If that is ok your recoil has a stuck part possibly something has broken off inside. If it's an older model try shooting WD40 inside the recoil as it could be rusty.

I have a Toro 16hp 38 in hxl with the parking brake stuck, is there a trick to this i dont know.

The snapping sound by the starter is either a bad cable connection or a bad starter. Check the cable at the starter to make sure it is tight and not corroded. If that is ok then test the starter. As for the parking brake, most mowers have a small disk with two brake pads like a disk brake on a car that is controlled by the brake/clutch pedal. Release the brake and check to see if the mechanism on the transmission is releasing. If it isn't it may need an adjustment

My toro riding lawnmower has sat for a couple of years without use. When I went to use it, it is smoking profusely out the exaust. Does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks

yes since the engine sat for a time the sealing rings on piston has rusted/stuck (you should never allow any engine to sit long time ) you can try removing spark plug and injecting some automatic transmission fluid into cylinder pull engine over slowly by hand adding more fluid then allow 24 hours for fluid to work it's magic then crank engine over a few times to clear last of fluid then reinstall plug and start may require cleaning of spark plug a few times with starting fluid to remove all last remains of fluid out run engine for good 30 min to see but it just may free up that stuck ring
Or you can just use it as is but be sure and maintain crankcase oil level as it will use oil and ring may unstick that way as well

I have a Toro lawn mower that I purchased last year, it was working great until one day I was using it and advance for the propell stopped working. Also I noticed the mower will not roll backwards. Please...

I know this may sound too simple, but Toro warranties their mowers for 2 full years to the original owner. Go to to find your nearest servicing dealer. They should be able to repair your mower at no cost to you.

This sounds like there is possible an internal transmission failure on your mower.

Good luck!

Stuck pull cord on Toro 6.5 self-propelled mower

1) Common problem when a mower sits for several weeks at a time between mowing;
check for extra grass debris to be glogged between the blade and the mower shell.

2) If the mower has a 'bail' or 'zone' control handle;
this releases a brake mechanism on the flywheel to allow it to rotate, and after it is running, releasing the lever will 'kill' the engine.

NOTE* when transporting a push mower in the trunk of a car, try to keep the mower as level as possible.

*extra note when mower has been transported in the back of a car;
sometimes the mower is placed in a trunk at such a severe angle that the oil from the crankcase is forced around the rings and sits on top of the piston so that when you try to pull the rope you have a 'hydra' lock. (that is when a liquid is between the piston and the spark plug) You cannot compress a liquid, so the rope appears stuck.

If this happens, remove the spark plug (make sure the loose plug wire is fastened away from any combustable that comes out of the spark plug hole *** AND THERE WILL BE A HUGE STREAM OF OIL AND GASOLINE, SO BE PREPARED TO CLEAN UP A MESS ***
pull as normal until fluid is dispelled from internal engine
clean or replace the spark plug
a few more pulls (no choke required) and you are up and going

Toro recycler will run until primed gas is consumed.

The problem is that the gas that sat in the carb all winter glazed it over and gummed it up. Begin by going to any auto parts store, like an aiutozone, and getting a bottle of carb. cleaner. Seafoam is one I use. Add it to your gas, one ounce per gallon of gas. Also, pick up a can of engine starting spray.

Remove the air filter and spray the engine starting spray into the air intake. Pull start the engine and give it additional squirts of engine starting spray until it runs smoothly.

Toro 6.5 hp 9 year old mower. Starts Ok; surges

Sounds like your carburetor needs to be cleaned out. The surging is usually a sign of running to lean (not getting enough gas) because of possible water, rust, gum, varnish or trash in your carb. Hope that helps.....
