Question about Kenmore Dryers
My 90 series Kenmore dryer, model 66901 has worked fine for the 10 years we've had it. However, recently it has started acting very flaky. It started off that I could do a load or two without problem, but then by the third load it would make a loud humming/buzzing noise when I'd press the start button and after about 3 seconds it would completely shut off (as if a fuse had been tripped). It would take about 15 minutes or so for whatever was tripped to reset, and then I could try it again. About 2 weeks ago, it would start right up after it had a chance to rest and "reset". Now, it wont.
I noticed when it first started doing that, the drum was incredibly hard to turn by hand. I thought it might have been a belt, because we'd get this fairly strong odor like burning rubber when this would happen. I opened up the dryer cabinet and inspected the belt, which appeared to still be supple and in good, strong working order. Cleaned out the blower (quite linty, thought perhaps that was bound up and cleaning it would be the fix...obviously, it wasn't). I have noticed that when it is trying to start but still failing, the belt is feebly and very slowly turning the drum before it stops all together. I have finally started having to hold the door open, with the switch held down so the dryer thinks it is closed, and push the fins in the drum whilst someone else pushes the start button. This works, but not always.
Also, the dryer is turning off spontaneously sometimes only a few minutes into the cycle, and other times it will run the whole way (although I tend to have to restart it several times a load). This just started happening with the other problems. I'm starting to think the motor is fritzing, and that my best bet is just to totally replace the darn dryer. So frustrating, because I thought Kenmores were supposed to be excellent and durable.
Yes, that would be a motor, but i would fix it, kenmore is a very good brand, easy to replace and what not, my upmost suggestion is to change the motor, and if you want it to really be a superb dryer i would buy the maint. kit, includes rollers, idler and belt. other than that these dryers are great the timers hold up and door switch's are pretty strong. while you do this i would make sure it is all clean.. here is a link to my site get the number and give me a call if you would like....www.whirlpoolpartssurplus.com
