Question about Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model

1 Answer

I have a Craftsman lawn tractor 21.5 hp, model no. 917.272463. The engine starts well, but while running it spits and sputters every second or so, whether at idle or at full throttle. I changed the fuel filter Spring of last year; air filters are clean, spark plugs are good. Gas in tank is fresh. I have never had this problem before. The tractor was just used last week with no problems. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Try changing the its oil-seals. The problem lies there. It may be damaged or the oil-seals are now smaller than its is used to and it is because of the heat. The oil-seal are rounded things that are made of rubber.

Craftsman 21 hp lawntractor model 917.289240 will no go in reverse.

If this is a hydro unit and it runs ok forward there should be no other reason other than linkage adjustment for it not to run in reverse, for safety reasons they are normally adjusted to run slower in reverse

I start the engine and it sputters at fast idle and then eventually shuts off.

I think that after you start the engine you need to move the throttle lever off what you are calling fast idle (which is full choke). Simply slide the throttle lever down until it smooths out and runs properly.

The black smoke is too much fuel, it is flooding out. Carb issue, I would pull the float bowl and clean carb, the needle in carb is stuck open pumping too much gas in.
