My compressor quit running, I can.'t find the reset buttorn

id try a new capacitor (cheapest solution) , but sounds to me that your compressor is done for. id bet the evap coil is quite dirty , this is a usuall cause

If the compressor is not running then change the start device (relay/overload) and you should nrun.

you don't connect it up direct unless you want to destroy the compressor and burn the motor out
check for a reset or thermal overload button if it just shut down when over pressured
replace the pressure control switch is the best fix after checking out the motor condition

Sounds like a bad contactor. The contactor will be near the compressor on the roof.

If the fan is not running is the compressor not running also...if neither is running the possible reasons are 1..no power to outside unit...2..bad contactor on outside unit.is this buzzing if it is this indicates no power...3 bad capacitor,do both compressor and fan humm then quit humming and hum some more...4 high pressure switch has shut unit down because fan wasnt running if compressor was running but not fan....if your unit has this there will be a manual reset button where the lines come out of unit...if compressor was running and fan was not...1 bad fan...2 bad capacitor.. if you do not have any electrical knowhow i would recommend calling a hvac tech to come and fix unit...Thanks

He can't, although it's a good guess. However, The compressor can be tested and run with a special test cord most all techs have.
It allows the compressor to be run independent of the rest of the machine and is the definitive test. I would not go forward unless that test is performed. Compressors are too expensive.

there are several reason we can consider why your compressor quit working, this due to mechanical or electrical function.trial should be done.1st trial switch off from the breaker your compressor disconnect pressure switch,connect the electrical circuit w/o the pressure swtich.direct connction the run the compressor if run, replace pressure switch.put back connection.if on 1st trial does not run the motor compressor the problem is on the motor
check the connection specially the over load protection,reset and run again.if still not runnign pull out the motor and have it repair on electric motor repair service center.then the motor is good put it back.have a nice day fix my rate thanks a lot.

Yes, all compressor motors have a reset button, usually marked by an arrow. Push it in till it clicks, should be ok. They usually conk off when they are lacking power, like when the compressor is running and somebody fires up the skil saw, off goes the reset.Hope this helps.

There is no reset switch. There is a thermal overload protector mounted on the compressor. Does the compressor hum and then give a click sound. If so your compressor has failed. If the compressor is cold (Room Temperature) and it does not try to run your thermostat may be bad. If so remove the temperature control and jumper the two main wires that connect to the control. Unit should be unplugged to do this operation. Insulated the wires so they do not contact any metal surface. Plug the freezer back in. If it runs and cools replace the thermostat.

the over-current relay is tripping out the compressor motor to prevent excessive current through motor windings. To prove this theory, open unit, find motor wires, disconnect wires from unit, and apply 120VAC to motor using external circuit-breaker source. Run 2 minutes max. If motor continuously turns, then relay is failing. Find it by tracing wires back to source and finding a small rectangular item. If motor again quits after 2 seconds, then this motor has an internal over-current self-resetting fuse that may be doing its job of preventing an electrical overload from a dead (shorted) motor.
