try running the engine for 10 minutes then remove the drain plug. The sump oil is burnt to almost tar from lack of service or badly worn rings allowing combustion fire into the sump

Blow by coming from the dip stick seal oil on Briggs & Stratton Vanguard 16 HP v-twin

2 options--- replace the dusted motor (faulty air filtering system) or re-ring the engine. Go for the new engine as the dust will have worn the piston and bearings.

Briggs & Stratton Vertical OHV Engine 18 hp blowing white smoke engine run great but a lot of smoke and also have oil being spit out of the black hose that come from engine to the carb.

Check your oil.

If it is overfilled, milky, or smells like gas. Your going to need to change that ASAP. It sounds like the float has stuck in the past or is still sticking, and it has flooded the crankcase with gas, which has mixed with the oil. And because it is overfilled it comes through the breather hose into the carb. This also explains the smoke most probably because the oil is spewing in the carb through the breather and being burned.

My 24 hp Briggs v twin smokes and uses oil bad. Smoke comes out of the left side when running. Can I use head gasket sealer to get me through the season?

There is no sealer that will resolve a head gasket issue, if that is what you have going on. and, if the head gasket failed remember it is a victim and not the cause, something else in happening.
I suspect that you have a compression related failure, based on the oil consumption and the smoke is probably blow by. This issue requires surgery to diagnose and fix.

I hev a briggs & Stratton 5.25hp lawnmower and

I would need the engine numbers to tell ya what to do for sure. It sounds like the engine is too full on oil. Check oil levels carefully. That engine capacity is only 1 pint/16 to 20 oz's ALSO you friend may have cleaned under your deck and turned the mower with the aircleaner DOWN. That causes oil to flow from the crankcase into the air cleaner and muffler. That aircleaner is a dry paper and should not have any oil on it, If this is the case then the oil accumulated in the muffler will burn off in time. Oil soaked paper aircleaners will cause this engine not to start.IT CANT BREATH

White Smoke comming out of Briggs and Stratton 21 HP V2 engine.

The white smoke may have been caused by having water in the fuel, or fuel tank [due to condensation or exposure to rain and snow]. It may have been that the mower got tipped for cleaning purposes, blade inspection, etc. and oil from the low lying oil pan got into the piston.

Either way, I recommend installing a brand new spark plug and new gasoline [you can purchase a little gas siphoning hose for a dollar or so at any auto parts store] If you have gasoline left over in a can from last year it is safe to use it in your car as it mixes with lots of new gas, but not in your small mower tank as it is basically outdated fuel.
